i bought a bike about 10 months ago..i have been having a few problems since i bought the bike like the pedal falling of...gear cog breaking..tyres wearing..it was a hybrid bike that i paid 280e for it at eurocycles at the long mile road in dublin..however the latest problem i have is that the ball bearings in the shaft seem to have worn away.i took it to a another bike shope and they cant get the shaft out as it is rusted..apparently its some old style of shaft that they use...im no expert on bikes...if i go back to the bike shop where i bought the bike...will i get be able to get another bike..i have a years guarantee..any advise please?

Is it the seatpost you're talking about?
If it is they can rust and seize partially bonding with the frame. It happens especialy if the bike is left outside alot.
Try smothering it in WD40 that often does the trick.
PS how mechanical minded are you ?

Yeah, I guess bringing it to basics here, I think what the OP is getting at is the bottom bracket (BB).

@ thebourke - see picture attached of common components of the average bike, I've circled where the bottom bracket is you might tell us is this the problem part you're faced with)

In honesty there's no reason a bike shop shouldn't be able to swap out a bottom bracket, if its rusted it'd be a bit of work but by no means impossible.

There's been a few changes in them in the last couple of years - you probably have an old square taper BB on your bike that has the bearings inside in the BB shell, new bikes tend to have BBs that are ouside the frame and are much easier to fit and remove as a result. My guess is the shop mechanic didn't want to get his hands dirty.

By the sounds of it you may have been sold a Bike Shaped Object (google it for more info) but suffice to say they are known for having reliabilty issues arising from cheap manufacturing of everything from the frame to the components resulting in a cheap bike but at the cost of frequent returns to the bike shop to have it repaired.

    Caveat emptor I guess

    It's the bottom bracket.

Bring it back to where you bought it.
