Is anyone else sick of people saying fatness is a disease. This kind of stupid talk only makes obese people have a reason not to exercise and eat well. I myself must admit im a bit pudgy round the edges but at 6'4 and 13.5 stone im not too bad and im going to try to loose a bit over the summer , do a bit of swimming etc. Anyway back on topic. People say its in their genes. If so then you should watch your weight even more.

If a person has diabetes they watch their sugar level and consequently do not eat certain foods. People need to realise fat people are just fat and need to go loose some weight! otherwise im thinkin higher charges for fat people on planes etc are a good idea so as something like whats in the link doesn't happen again!

I actually know someone who has a disease (don't know it's name) that makes them feel hungry constantly and they're fat because of this.

    This disease is rare tho.

Definitions of disease on the Web:

    * an impairment of health

So yes, I'd say it is a disease. However, I'd argue that one does not have to have a disease in order to end up orverweight.

I, personally, am a fat bastard. However, as aware I am of this, I'm terrified of social surroundings (I reckon I've got some kind of social anxiety or something like that) and therefore I generally don't exercise or venture out of the house. When you're not exercising and just sitting around, there's only one way your weight will go.

I also can't manage to get the enthusiasm or motivation to exercise around the house (though I gave it a fair shot in January for a few weeks, but it didn't last. No motivation for it).

I'd say all of about 20% of overweight people are overweight purely because they're lazy. By that I mean, they are happy to go out and about, socialise normally, have a regular normal daily routine, etc. but just cut shortcuts in their day and generally laze instead of exercising during their day when exercising wouldn't be a big issue (ie; cut out walking, etc.).

The other 80% are probably like me, or have other mental issues or physical problems. Some people are just naturally big. Still though, I could never, ever understand how someone being overweight is an issue for other people. I'm sure everyone has their own issues to worry about, without making things harder for someone else.

There's a girl that lives around the corner from me. She's pretty big (although pretty good looking, too, if I were being honest). I once seen a group of girls chanting insults at her and pushing her around, purely because she was overweight. Some of the things some people will do is just inhumane.

I'm sure some people would be able to go out and exercise more often if they didn't have the added fear of being humiliated in front of other people for something that has no bearing or affect on other people at all.

That's how I feel about it, anyway.

some people might have an issue with metabolism alright, but there's nothing that can't be beaten with a bit of discipline and excercise. It's the sheer laziness of many "sufferers" of fatness that pisses me of the most.

the bluntness of that cracked me up, fair play to ya man. I wouldn't worry about getting out and just walking for a while man, screw what the cheeky little sh1tes on the road think.
why not meet up with that hot girl you mentioned and do a walk around wherever you live a couple of evenings a week? you could be company/moral support for each other. i know what you mean about motivation though, going out running can be sooo boring.

I totally agree... There is a lot of obesity in my family and it was always put down to "genes". Maybe so but, I hold my hand up and say, I overate to the point where I was nearly sick and never exercised. As far as im concerned, my eating habits were handed down to me when as a child, I was given dinners that would feed a family in africa for a week add that to the never ending supply of crisps (my dad worked in tayto) and chocolate (my brother worked in caburys) and I ended up obese by the time I was 18. The turning point was when I seen photos of my 21st and I looked like a beached whale... I hit the gym like a bolt of lightening, changed my eating habits, lost 5 stone over two years and am living prove that fatness is not a disease. The "disease" word is just used as an excuse for obese people to sit on THEIR fat lazy asses and blame it on anything and everone but THEMSELVES. If you are OVERWEIGHT, EAT HEALTHY AND EXERCISE - PROBLEM SOLVED. I'm not talking about lettuce leaf diets and running marathons. Just three meals a day, not six. Just one packet of crisps, not the whole six pack etc etc. and go on a long walk three or four times a week.
    FATNESS IS NOT A DISEASE....
    IT'S AN EPIDEMIC

20% because of laziness? I'd say you have your figures mixed up there, its more like 80-90%! You can't use a fear of people making fun of you as an excuse not to exercise! Buy a treadmill, do normal straches etc, lift dumbells! A fear of the outside world is no excuse!

I beg to differ. Spend the next five years leaving your house only one time per week, for no more than an hour, and let me know how you feel about life in general when you're done.

Trust me, even if I was an out and about kind of person, with a great social life, job, hobbies, etc. Losing weight wouldn't be something I'd be trying to do. My weight doesn't bother me that much really. Dunno how it annoys you though.

That is completely off topic then. I'm Talking about obese people using the "disease " factor as an excuse not to exercise! Your just talking about yourself being shy and claustrophobic in public!

I'm a big person, and i've never said it's down to being a disease and definately not down to diet or lack of excercise. i eat 3 healthy meals a day, walk 7 nights a week when i can for an hour and a half to two hours with the dog. depending how late i get out from work of course so i can't guarantee it's will definately be 7 nights a week, but would definately walk most evenings.

So from my conclusion it is down to genes :D although i could be completely wrong and that's fair enough, but i don't see how i could be upsetting other people to charge me more for a seat on a plane :P

    i think it's the "big-greedy-pig-who-should-stop-eating-chips" gene.

But i rarely eat chips :P
I suppose it all depends on how quick people break down their food also. I've a friend who's thinner than me, doesn't excerise and eats way more than me, he'd even finish my dinner off sometimes when i can't, which is most times.
He's trying to put on weight but can't so i guess it goes both ways for people.:p
