    I have a Dimension 3100 which had 2*256 MB 1Rx16 PC2-4200 cards installed.
I wanted to upgrade the memory so I ordered
2*512MB 1Rx8 PC2-5300 cards but now I dont think they are compatable as the computer beeps 3-4 times when I power it on and it doesnt boot up (not even to DOS).....I know I should of done more research before odering:(
I was wondering if someone could help me pick the correct RAM.
Im taken it from here that the PC takes DDR RAM but im taken it from here that it takes DDR2.
Looking on crucial it doesnt look like they have pc2-3200 or pc-4200. The other websites I mentioned seem expensive.
    Any help would be appreciated.

this has been taken from the dell online documentation , and they are saying that your machine takes ddr2 memory , it should say it on the memory that you are taking out , what type it is.

    DDR2 Memory Overview

If your computer only has one memory module installed on the system board, you can increase your computer memory by installing an additional memory module.
Your computer supports DDR2 memory. For additional information on the type of memory supported by your computer, see "Specifications."

note.gif NOTE: Always install DDR2 memory modules in the order indicated on the system board. notice.gif NOTICE: Do not install ECC or buffered memory modules. Only unbuffered, non-ECC memory is supported.
    • If you install mixed pairs of DDR2 400-MHz (PC2-3200) and DDR2 533-MHz (PC2-4300) memory, the modules function at the slowest speed installed.
    • Be sure to install a single memory module in DIMM connector 1, the connector closest to the processor, before you install modules in the other connectors.

    Thanks for the reply.
I think I know where I went wronf when I ordered
The cards I got were PC2-5300 and from the info above one of the cards supported is DDR2 533-MHz (PC2-4300)
The sticker on the cards I removed say nothing about DDR2 but I looked up the part number and they DDR2.
The cards I ordered were PC2-5300 which I believe 667MHz. Its also ECC.
is it possible to get these cards to work?
