I would certainly be tempted, it sounds like a good event. What is the best way to get to the start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,031 ✭✭✭CheGuedara

Yup, signed up for the 160km.

Trying to find a place to stay O/n on the Friday & Sat is the next job on the list

Thinking about it alright, though it would suit me a lot better if it started and finished in Ennis - its probably too late for them to go changing routes .....

Doing a charity cycle on a similar route the week after, so won't be. Was there last year and lovely part of the country for it if you get the weather!

I'm thinking of doing it. I might be going down with my wife and stay in one of the hotels or guesthouses for the weekend. I'm going there on Saturday for the long weekend and I'll be bringing my bike to do a bit around the coast road and up corkscrew Hill.

It's a beautiful part of the country, I actually got married in Ballyvaughan a year and a half ago and try get down a few times a year.

Yeah, it's deviding the ranks in my club too - the West Cork could be very good.

I'm doing the TdB mainly because I haven't cycled there before and secondly because being part of the An Post series it's likely to be well supported as regards marshalls, H20 stops etc - oh and there's the promise of a barbeque afterwards

Actually that one might work better for me. Would be no prob to do both though if someone had transport (e.g. car) on down to Skibbereen on the Saturday afternoon/evening- train doesn't seem a likely option.

Rode this last year. A great event good route, good surfaced roads and beautiful area though weather can make it tough. It was a cold miserable day 08
Ballyvaughan is about 25 miles from Galway turn off the Galway / Limerick rd at Kilcolgan.Anyone who is thinking of going should try to stay over sat night to take full advantage of the post event BBQ.

I'm trying to suss out places to stay at the moment - have a gang heading up, would you have any recommendations? Some of the cottage things look good for a couple of nights but the prices are nuts.

Damn:mad:, I'm doing the West Cork but if I thought for a second I was fit enough I'd do this too, that is one hell of a route, fan-didlly-tastic.

There would be plenty of accomodation in Lahinch, Lisdoonvarna or Doolin. or Kinvarra isn't too far away.
There may even be a hostel or two in Doolin.

I really want to do this (the Burren is my favourite coastline in the whole world). But the boss says no.

Best of luck and enjoy to all those ding it.

As for accomodation - there is loads in Lahinch, Lisdon and Doolin.
For those wanting to stay a bit longer check out "Rent an Irish Cotaage" for self catering in Ballvaughan, Bell Harbour, Fanore.

2 great pubs in Ballyvaughan (Monks and a Whiskey place).
Try O'Donoghues in Fanore - quirky but nice all the same.

    I'll be doing this.
The cut off thing is a bit confusing
Closing date for Registrations is June 12th.
If you do not register before this date, you will not receive your bag of accessories for the Tour by post. You will have to collect on the morning of the event.
It seems that you can register online after the 12th but that you will not get your bag of goodies in the post.

    The Whiskey Place is "O'Loughlins".

Fantastic little pub, it doesn't open until 9.00 or 9.30pm apart from Sundays (they still do holy hour).

These sportives are an ideal way for new riders to get out on the road with others. No need to be a club member. No rules in particular for the event other than follow the rules of the road.

If however you get into a group of other cyclists there is a certain etiquette to ensure it works well for everyone. Now groups vary widely in their level of organisation, especially in a sportive, but some tips:

    (1) You dont need to be part of a club.
    (2) Follow the rules of the road.
    (3) Do as much work as you are capable of - this is not a competitive event. You dont have to take turns at the front, if you are not able for it.
However, it would be easier to draft a group going at similar pace to yourself. If you dont take a turn, then out of courtesy, just explain that why (wrecked/wouldnt know what to do etc). To be honest, these type of things (having only done 3) are usually very friendly affairs - lots of like minded people on bikes.

    (4) Pace yourself.
    (5) Hydrate - often.
    (6) Wear comfy cycling clothes, particulalry shorts.

Once past Doolin, it is largely rolling downhill to the finish in Ballyvaughan. SO pace yourself till there. Only 2 real climbs (Corkscrew Hill) and Cliffs of Moher, and they are not that high (though I am not sure as to gradient). The road surface up to Cliffs of Moher is spectacular, so that helps. But descent in toward Doolin could be tricky.

Just registered for this cycle online. The cut-off date for registration has been extended to June 16th (according to the website) due to the high amount of entries.

    Looking forward to it now!

Just signed up, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in sharing cheap accomodation, like a hostel or something? If we get numbers we could possibly go for a discount aswell, instead of everyone booking individually.
