Are 1Tb worth it? Stable or not

Hey just wanted to gauge opinion,
having had my new 1Tb dive(maxtor basics) fail only two weeks into operation i've since done a bit of looking and it would appear that 1Tb drives are more likley to have a failure than their smaller counterparts due to the density withing the drive.

I have a 300Gb (3.5") maxtor, a 300Gb (2.5") WD, a 1Tb (2x 3.5" 500Gb) maxtor and allthough there have been some hairy moments with them all, none have ever come close to failing, or show any signs.

So the question is, are you better off buying more smaller drives for capacity increases.

We all know that you're better off spreading your data as much as possible, but for single disc increases, is 500Gb the limit?

The failure rate for Seagate/Maxtor 5GB and 1TB disks is known to be very high. Best advise is avoid Seagate/Maxtor.

I've had Seagate 1TB for over a year now with no problems... as of yet! However, the first external HD I bought was a 320GB IOmega (Which uses the seagate hd) and it formatted itself after 6months so my views are pretty conflicting, nonetheless I hope to god my 1TB doesn't break down on me, couldn't cope with losing al my stuff! :D

I'm using a Buffalo 1TB drive that I got out of Argos a while ago. I'd say I own it about four or five months at this stage. Haven't had a problem yet.

In saying that, I have another 1TB drive (same one again) and it has exactly the same content as the one I'm currently using. So if one fails, I haven't lost anything, and can simply go to Argos and exchange the broken one.

If you feel that there is a chance that it may fail on you, and you value the content of it at all, I'd highly advise having copies of all your stuff. As far as I'm concerned, every drive will fail sooner or later, and it is just a matter of when.

I have 5x 1TB WD Caviar drives, all working fine. Two have been in it for about 6 months. Just swapped out the old 250-400G drives lately.

WD is the way to go, I stopped using Seagate and Maxtor (in particular) some years ago after some failures.

Maxtor sucks donkey balls. Had 3 fail on me. Now use Western Digital.

On a side note, found an old 500MB WD harddrive. WOrked when I plugged it in. Says it all, really

Good to know, I've had a Seagate hd fail before and got a new Western Digital Raptor delivered with the click of death, So I suppose You take a risk with any hd. 2 of my f1's are over a year old though, no problems. 2 other friends of mine bought them at the same time a yr ago also and they've had no problems, so maybe a small percentage fail.

I've the same done as it happens! Better safe than sorry.
When you look at the price of a 1TB Toshiba from Elara, E89, why would you not?

I had a Seagate give up after about 8 months.

They charge 30 delivery per order so wouldn't justify order for just a hd. I've dealt with them a few times, great store. You can change the language to english by clicking the UK flag
