Legal internships generally paid?

    Or unpaid?

I always find it awkward to bring up the issue of pay and remuneration, I know it varies from country to country (and perhaps even firm to firm) but in general are legal internships paid?

Or has this recession affected the policies of these companies?

    Regards

I know in the large law firms in this country they are usually paid but, when I was looking into them in England and America what I found is that they only gave you minimal expenses to get you by on.
I think though that legal internships can be so valuable that sometimes you have ask yourself if the experience is payment enough?

Really? I know for certain that the large US firms pay up to 2000 dollars and more a week (I was studying there for the year). They have a very convenient website where you can compare number of staff, wages, holidays etc. Shame we don't have a similar system here.

Of course I'll do it for free (in this kind of market). But I was wondering do people know for certain? And I do mean about the big 5 firms.

I know PwC and its ilk pay an okay salary for its internship programme - a few hundred a week...

Afaik you get paid what a trainee gets paid (in the big 5 - not sure about the smaller ones).

It's the same in the States where you get what a guy starting off gets which can be upwards of 8-10 grand a month. Unfortunately you wan't get close to that here.

As long as there's some income I'll be chuffed... the US firms (the ones offering 2500 dollars a week) didn't want an Irish exchange student it seems ;)

The crazy thing is - they give you an internship for 3 months... that's roughly 32,000 dollars for your internship!

I hear a trainee is on 16-18k a year? Minimum wage basically, correct?

Not in the big firms. It varies and there have been cuts but it's a lot more than minimum wage.

Oh, that's good to hear. Well experience is what really matters here anyway. Though some spare cash to invest in law books/FE-1 manuals would be nice too.
