    Hi all,

I'm a big fan of "speedo" style swimming trunks and briefs (less drag in the water etc) but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find any. The JJB stores in Blanchardstown and Liffey Valley used to carry a great collection each summer (chorline and washing leads to downgrade of equipment so I would replace regularly) but I just can't seem to find any these days. Does anyone know of a good swimming store in Ireland or even an Irish-based online shop I could buy from?

    Thanks

I think Elverys and Lifestyle in Blanchardstown stock them. Not totally sure though. A good online store is swimshop.co.uk. I've never used it personally but a lot of swimmers would buy all their togs/equipment there.

Dunnes have speedo style trunks for 6 quid. They are not flash, but do the trick.

How durable are they? The speedo endurance range last ages. You could easily get more than a year out of them.

I hate the way that practically all the shops sell those massive bermuda style shortts for swimming - all the young lads wear them - they are vile!:( Far too much drag.

I always wear speedo style swimming trunks. The last couple of pairs I bought were very good - I got them in HOM's online shop - http://www.hom-fashion.co.uk/

I also saw Speedo style swimming trunks on sale in Debenhams, so you can still get them if you know where to look. But for the biggest range and choice, online is yer only man!:)

Hmmm. Togs that protect against uv rays and create a highly seductive appearance:pac:.

I got Speedo Endurance in the main Liffey Valley center (Lifestyle or Champion - can't remember) a few months back.

+1 on the bermudas; HOW can anyone swim like that; its like cycling with a parachute.

    LOL! :pac:

You are absolutely right. There are some fashion police officers about who have given me grief in the past for my speedos. Not cool in their books apparently.

How is it that the ludicrous image of playing football in swimming togs is not matched in their minds by the folly of wearing football shorts whilst swimming?

Most Irish people don't really swim anyway. They just move around a bit in the water to cool down on sunny days. Don't want to sound elitist (I'm no Phelps!) but I am always amused at how few people actually want to 'swim'.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the replies over the last few days. Had a fairly fruitless search in Dublin city centre while the girlfriend was doing the mini-marathon yesterday (ok, there were a few here and there but a small selection/choice and in sizes that would have ended up more Bermuda-style on me!) so I've decided to go online as advised earlier. Shame we have to resort to this. If all goes belly-up in the job during the downturn maybe I'll open one myself!

you might be onto something there. 2 people in the last week have asked me "where would I get togs etc?" I've recommended a couple of places but never 100% sure they were going to find what they wanted. A specialised swim store might just do well.

I officially give up. Happened to be down at Blanchardstown yesterday evening, popped over to the massive Lifestyle Sports beside the centre at the new retail park side. They used to even carry fastskin and LZR suits from Speedo. Had a look around yesterday – three boxer styles from Nike in L, XL and XXL sizes. I'm just destined not to find any!!

I agree. It's not a get rich quick scheme, but I'd say such a shop would tick over nicely if there was a half-decent e-store attached.

That is just ludicrous :(. Any hope of a trip out of Dublin this weekend? Incorporate a trip to the Galway Volvo Ocean Race with a visit to Lifestyle on the Headford Road. The upstairs section of the shop is devoted to discounted odds and ends and there is a full rail of proper swimming togs - all brands and sizes. No order to them, but fun rooting through them! Just an idea.

Ah thanks, bit far from Drogheda to Galway, especially if I can't find anything!

Don't know about that. You can always get swimming gear at major competitions around the country. A lot of competitive swimmers would get stuff there and those looking for more expensive stuff would usually get it online. It'd be catering mainly to older swimmers. An Irish based online store would probably be more successful.

After a weekend of searching I had some decent success in my search! Popped down to Liffey Valley to JJB (why does it always seem like it's closing down?!) and managed to get myself a bargain – a pair of Adidas briefs for only 1.50 (yes, one euro fifty cent!) and a brilliant pair of Speedo Endurance+ for only 5 euro. A very happy man.
On Sunday then picked up a couple of pairs in the JJB Sports Store in Dundalk too which is fully stocked and certainly isn't having a closing down sale! There were good options in Elvery's in Blanch too so in case anyone else is looking there's a few places out there, if you're willing to look!
