It's really not great at all. You can get a lot better for a lot cheaper.

I really do not like the combat system

and they turned tough as nails Zack into this whiney puppy, trying to impress everyone

Zavvi.co.uk have it for £13, plus postage. So it'll probably work out at about €18-20, but if you buy from Play you could be waiting 2 weeks for it to arrive.

Anything ive ever got from play.com has only ever taken 4 days

Little Big Planet took 3 weeks to arrive for me, and I've been waiting over a week now for a Patrick Wolf CD that I ordered. I don't think I've ever gotten anything from Play in 4 days, lucky you! I guess it depends on whether they're shipping from Jersey or Budapest etc.

Well about half way through the game some stuff happens to Zack and it fast forwards a few years and he's not so much the 'puppy dog' as you described. The general concensus about this game is that it's alright - Retr0 would have you believe it's sh!te, I would say that's it's pretty good, definately worth your time.

Did you ever finish it Retr0? Any (good/half decent) game that ends with the protagonist dying is worth a play in my book. The end of the game is just brilliant, it completely explains the purpose of the DMW. One of the greatest uses of an element of gameplay as narrative. I cried at the end :pac:

However, if you don't like the combat system, you're probably not going to enjoy the game. Don't do what Retr0 said he did and only use the same few spells, combining your materia into awesome combos is one of the hidden fun things to do in the game.

Don't get burned out playing side-missions - they can be worth it for the rare materials but they're more fun if you play a few at a time.

I think that the EU release is a bit borked difficulty wise. I imported the Japanese version and really enjoyed that, but when I went to play the EU version I found that Normal mode was far too easy and Hard mode is a total bitch - with some enemies you literally have to hit them 50 times to take them down, it's not fun. The Japanese voice acting is much better as well - I'm convinced that every one hates Genesis in the English release due to the stupid poncy voice of the actor. At the moment I'm playing a 'redub' of Crisis Core, Japanese voices with English subs. It's great :)

tl;dr: Pro: Music is great, cutscenes are great, feelings of FFVII nostalgia are great, battle system is a lot of fun when you customise it, some of the boss battles are kickass. Ending is amazing. Gackt :D The story is actually good if you give it a chance.

Con: Battle system can grate at times, English acting sucks in places, even so far as it can ruin the enjoyment of the story. Some of the Japanese quirks the characters have don't translate over very well. Difficulty is broken in places.

Christ the Hard version is impossible!!!

I had to start again on the Normal Setting which is acting too easy.

I will play it more, got it for a flight to Germany in 2 weeks but will have a few hours of play before then too

I did finish the game, unfortunately I had to review it. I thought Zack remained an annoying twat throughout the game and it utterly ruined Cloud as a character as well. As for the ending, what a load of melodramatic bull and adds absolutely nothing to the FFVII universe. It was handled a lot better in FFVII. Haven't the new Square Enix heard of subtlety? Speaking of which don't get me started on the utter retarded over the top cut scenes. The ending explained the meaning of DMW? Not in the game I played. In the game I played the ending was really contrived and DMW was a lottery that kept interrupting the flow of gameplay. It was far from gameplay as storytelling as you can get.

As for Genesis, he's the worst bad guy in any videogame I've ever come across. Moaning emo git that keeps quoting passages from some play 'Loveless' as if it was high art and actually meant anything.

Battle system is awful. You just keep whacking X and using the overpowered dodge to get out of the way when the enemy telegraphs it's attacks to you. the odd magic spell gets thrown in. You can create combos by adding 1 extra attack to the end of your chain but mashing X is more effective.

Oh and prepare to grind for the last boss by doing boring side missions.

    Overall:

Cons: Pitiful story, protagonist and bad guy, feels like it's taking place in an empty FFVII world, little nostalgia since these aren't the characters represented in FFVII, boring repetitive combat system, awful soundtrack full of over the top wailing guitars, the pure random madness of DMW, no pay off in the ending after all the pain, I had to pay for it and play it.

Pros: It's not as bad as my over the top slating makes it sound but it's not great either, it looks decent if very repetitive.

Overall it's painfully bland and average as a hack and slash. There's so much better on the PSP like god of war, jeanne d' arc, loco roco, patapon etc. there's no reason to bother with it and if you are a fan of FFVII you'll be disappointed.

So you didn't think that the way the memories fade and hang in the DMW was a good use of it as a narrative device?

Genesis isn't the bad guy. He's an antagonist, not a bad guy. Hojo and Sephiroth are and remain the bad guys. Genesis just hates Shinra. I like Genesis' addition to the story as it makes sense that a scientist would have to try a few experiments before they got it right. However if they do remake FFVII I don't want him to appear in the game. Maybe in a letter on a desk, but beyond that, nothankyou.jpeg

I watch a lot of anime so perhaps I'm more forgiving of this sh!te than most people. I enjoyed it, I know a lot of people who enjoyed it, it has a good score on Metacritic. General concensus is that it's an average to good game.

Anyway, if you think I'm bad, a mate of mine has Loveless printed out and loved each and every quote in the game. He's an arts student though so it's to be expected. :pac:

Nope I didn't think much of it really, it wasn't exactly as moving as chapter 11 in valkyria chronicles :)

You just know thought that if they ever remake FFVII they are going to add in stuff that will link in all the FFVII spin off awfulness, it's something that the new square enix will do. I'll cry if they do it :(

Actually, speaking of the more wussified cloud in Crisis Core, I did hear that he's a total pussy in the japanese FFVII as well so it might actually be more fitting :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,919 ✭✭✭✭Gummy Panda

Lets just say i was shocked at how much a pussy Zack was. I expected him to be the tough one and the game to show that Cloud was really a big pussy that lived off Zack's memories.

Zack was like some sort of Cloud/Tidus hybrid in FFVII:CC. Really annoying and a total pussy. Also that beach fighting scene was stupid.

The bad guys should be ashamed of themselves allowing themselves to be beaten up by a pussy with an umbrella. It's only a slight step up from handbag and a step down from manbag.

If you have played final fantasy VII you know already what happens at the end. If you haven't then you'll probably hate the game anyway. Don't think there's anything else spoilery there.
