iTunes/iPod Headwreck.

I've just done a clean install of iTunes on a Vista machine that had no music whatsoever onboard.

I then used Sharepod to copy the contents of my iPod to the machine with the import to iTunes option ticked.

Everything went fine all the music was copied & is in the iTunes library.

The problem is that everything is appearing in the iTunes list window twice

Any idea why that is? and is there any way to sort it before I do my next Sync?

would it be possible that you copied it over twice or that when you copied it over, there was already a library of music still there and a second one copied in beside the 1st one , maybe try delete the library and copy the music over again ??

Absolutely no music whatsoever on the machine prior to copying the music from the iPod to the laptop. (yet everything was listed twice in iTunes).

What I think happened is that "Sharepod" might have actually caused the problem. When I choose the option to "Copy To PC" there was a check box with the option to import to iTunes as well & I checked that because I thought it wold be handy to get the music from the iPod onto the PC & also import it into iTunes on the fly (in the one operation), I think itunes was seeing the music copied to a new folder on the PC by Sharepod plus its own imported entries ???

Anyway, I deleted everything from the iTunes library & then used the add from folder option in iTunes itself to import from the folder Sharepod copied to & everything is grand now.

If that is indeed what happened it's a bit silly to have that option in Sharepod?, unless of course I misunderstood how it should be used?
I done it using the copy to PC plus import to iTunes options but it has a "Backup iPod" option too. I wonder what the difference between "Copy To PC" & "Backup iPod" is?

Any of you familiar with Sharepod? I'm sorted now but I'd like to know for again.

In my opinion, you'd be better having a external HD with a back up of your itunes library rather than relying on the single copy on your iPod.

I'd agree but ending up with the iPod being the only source was not by choice, It was due to the sudden death of a HDD & the original PC it was registered to is no more.

Either way I'm sorted now but the outstanding issue is how I ended up with duplicates when I used Sharepod to transfer from the iPod to the new Laptop?

I kinda meant you should have a backup of your HD. Your copy on your iPod, a copy on the PC and a backup of the PC on an external drive.

Thus you can always wipe the iPod and restore it.

Then you wouldn't need share pod.

I meant that I had a copy on the Laptop (It was stolen)

A copy on an external HDD (It went belly up)

A copy on the iPod itself.

There's only so many braces you can wear LOL!.

Well I'm a firm believer in "Backup Backup Backup" & my circumstances were way above the odds but it just goes to show what can happen & the grief associated with it when it does. :)
