If a main dealer upgrades the software on a car, should the owner have to pay? If so how much would you expect to pay?

Yep, the owner should pay - after all, they've worked on the car!!

    Depends on car etc

    Its an interesting question....

    In an ideal world:-
If the "up-grade" is to fix an underlying problem, then it should be free....
If the "up-grade" is to add additional functionality, enable a new feature etc, then i guess they could ask for payment.

As its not an ideal world, i'd say you'd be paying through the noise either way!

Its to fix an underlying problem. Or in other words doesn't give any new functionality. Its to fix a starting problem. Its the CIM module on a Astra. Seems to be a common fault from what I've read. Opel seem unable to resolve ECU and CIM faults these days, at least anyone I know has had poor experience with these kind of problems on Opels.

If the car is within warranty then yes, but if it's out of warranty maybe try a goodwill gesture from Opel. The dealer might just do it for free rather than going through the motions on one of those.

But surely they would only charge at most a hafl hour - an hour of labout for this which would be pretty cheap.

My computer receives regular free updates to keep OS software up to date in terms of functionality, security issues and bug fixes. Only if I want a new OS with new functions do I have to pay. I see no reason why cars should be different. If the software requires updating it is because it has issues, why should the customer, who has paid once, be made to pay again?

    2yrs old.

I'd be demanding that it was FOC as goodwill if the dealer had supplied it to you and was a known fault.

Try getting onto the salesman you bought it from and see will he do anything
