Dole Question?

I have a good friend who is on Jobseekers Allowance and it is getting €81 a week because her parental income is means tested into it. Recently she has had a very tough time with her parents and is moving out/sort of kicked out! We have been friends for years and both our parents are too.

Basically my father has offered her free accommodation for the summer in his fathers old place as he died a while ago and it is not modern enough to rent commercially but very liveable in at the same time. This is only for the summer as she is thinking of going to college then.

What she and us are wondering is how this may effect her social welfare claim, Can she amend the address and status of the claim to living independently on her own. Would she be required to show rent? Would the fact she has free accommodation be classed as a benefit in kind? and thus reduce the claim? If she could get full Jobseekers Allowance it would allow her a great degree of independence, she has a car but will now have to run it herself so if she has to live off €80/week she will have a pretty miserable standard of living.

We are going to get the ESB over into her name also, this should give her proof of address for her claim.

Any ideas? We have been good friends with her and she is pretty fragile now and would like to help her get this sorted and feel I owe it as my family kinda rode the gravy train of the Tiger when it was going and now she faces becoming homeless if I don't help her.

First of all, it is very nice of your family for sorting her out rent free for the summer.

Second of all, the free rent will not be treated as a benefit in kind because it is not from an immediate family member. They will simply look at her case as having less outgoings - but no incomings - so she should probably still get the full 204 euro when reassessed.

She should apply for a reassessment as soon as she moves house. It may take the whole summer to process her claim, though. So she will probably have to go to the community welfare officer and ask for supplementary welfare.

Lastly, I think going to College is a great idea. A recession is the time to be in college, frankly! Anyway. Does she know which college she wants to attend, or what course she'd like to do? If not, or if she's unsure, inquire at FAS - they will have all the information she'll need, including who to talk to, etc.
