Lydiard reckons that 1 run a day of equal distance is better than 2 runs adding up to the same total. I have tried them before and they start to become a hassle, you never have enough gear as they'll all be in the wash and you start to feel more tired. I remember reading that if your milage is less than 70 per week you don't need doubles.
Whats this wash you talk about ? you mean the bag or boot ;)

last night for example I had to go to the wash basket to get my cycling shorts and running shorts, they smelled pretty bad too but everything else was in the machine and it doesn't seem to matter how many pairs of shorts and socks I buy, I still never seem to have enough

There's your problem man! If you wore 2 pairs of trousers to work every day you'd soon run out of them too.

I've got this great domestic appliance that takes care of my washing. A wife is very expensive to maintain but worth it :D

Nothing to add on doubles that hasn't already been said other than every time I try them I injure myself.

True but it's a must to prevent chaffing of my chunky tighs, I know the vaseline is an option but I don't have enough faith in it so I wear the cycling shorts.

I actually did the stats on this in our house recently but forgot to post them here. I was busy with work so was bunging the dirty kit into the wash but only sorted it all at the weekend.
    Our weekly washing consisted of
    10 pairs trousers
    3 dresses
    3 blouse
    1 skirt
    5 jumpers
    9 teeshirts
    7 vest tops
    5 pairs tights
    8 pairs bike shorts
    21 pairs other shorts
    29 running tops
    3 running jackets
    4 long sleeved tee's
    41 pairs of socks
    10 towels
    set of bed clothes
    23 bra's (sports and normal)
forgot to count the jocks and pants but safe to assume at least 1 a day
    1 swim trunks 2 swimsuits
    4 tracksuit bottoms
    2 fleece tops
    3 firemans uniforms

How can 2 people get through 41 pairs of socks in a week? How do we even own that many socks??? I took a picture too.

Glad you said that was 2 people - I was wondering how Zuppy got through 23 bras all on his own...

You are all doing too much washing - bad for clothes, wears them out. Once you are out in the fresh air no-one will notice how many days you have worn them for.

I beg to differ dna leri, remember I've recently worn the same kit for 6 days running :-) yucky doesn't even start.:D Seriously though, I do think there is merit in your thinking but I like the freshness of clean clothes so I will continue to wash 41 pairs of socks a week.

The dishwasher is another interesting one, often full of water bottles and tupperware.

    1. You must have a good bit of spare time since MdS to audit your laundry!!
    2. 21 pairs of running shorts in a WEEK? that is 3 a day on average
    3. 29 running tops - 4 a day
    4. Bras - thats a lot of bras to own
    5. Fireman's uniforms - enough info on the kinky stuff!!!

I've never done a laundry audit, but there are 6 in my house (2 adults and 4 kids) and we would have no where near that amount of washing . I'd say we have about 45 pairs of socks washed every week - between 6!!!

My running gear gets washed once or twice a week. Come back, hang it up and leave it dry out. Might be smelly but who cares - it'll be smelly and sweaty in a few minutes running anyways.
I do change my running socks regularly though. You canot put on pre-sweated socks. A big no no

Why in Gods name is there 21 shorts in there?! That's just insane. You can wear the same shorts day in day out. I only own 3 pairs and I wouldn't go through the 3 of them in a week. Tops have to be changed but sometimes you can get away with the same top two days in a row. Socks only get one wearing.

The missus would never stand for re-using running gear, any running gear, without washing it.

I too beg to differ. Ive run behind some people who Id prefer to stay upwind of. (Though hard to call whether thats personal hygiene or washing, either way, stinky). Id be paranoid that passersby would smell my stink if I had skanky gear on. :)

@hunnymonster. Im in awe. I dont even own 23 bras. Ive never quantified my laundry, I barely even sort whites and colours. My socks are so often worn odd, I dont even consider them in pairs anymore. Youre some kind of wonderful....

Clean gear for racing ok, but I'm with the re-use, recycle brigade for everyday use. Though I have to admit, I've made the mistake of bringing 4 day old gear to the gym once or twice. :o Not good, I know ...

Only part of my gear I don't wash after every run is my bra and even then I usually wash it. Do you know how much bacteria and germs are festering in the groin of your running shorts?

oh sweet jebus i cant believe people re-wear running gear

(well i would rewear tracksuit bottoms or outer shorts once or twice, but anything else, no)

i have umpteen old football shirts and driflos to wear , they dry in no time anyhow so why would anyone wear smelly stuff?
