    I did a fresh install of winXP yesterday, I wasn't paying much attention and installed to the E: drive instead of C: I eventually got this sorted out and formatted E: however when I start the pc I'm asked which windows Xp I want to start. The pc still thinks there is an OS on the E: drive.

    How do I get rid of this message is it something to do with the mbr?

    You need to remove it from the boot.ini.

    Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery (settings) > Edit.

    From here, remove the bottom line from the list and then save it.

    From this:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    To this:
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    It may differ slightly but remove the one that isn't the default (told underneath timeout).
