Las Vegas or Lost Vagrants

    My fellow boardianers,
Mrs. Goat has put forward the idea that she and I, along with another couple, should venture to the city of Las Vegas and spend some time there, 6 or 7 days. I have mixed feelings about this.

I have always maintained that it’s a big world out there so why the hell would I want to go to the States when there are so many other wonderful places that I might go to instead. Mexico, Chile, Cuba, Norway all beckon and call to me but she wants Vegas.

So I ask myself what is it that I dislike about Vegas? Is it the vulgar lights, the hackneyed shows, the gambling, the seedy motels and cheap hookers, the impersonators who don’t look, sound or sing like Elvis, the tacky ‘renew your vows’ churches, every gutter overflowing with someone’s failed dreams? Is it because it’s bound to be full of ‘murcans that I’m a tad unwilling to go.

Or, on the other hand is the appeal of Las Vegas the same reasons as above and it’s just a matter of me changing my attitude to what I’m seeing. The Glistening Lights, the Extravagant Shows, the Gambling. The deliciously Seedy hotels and Hookers are cheap. Impersonators who perfectly fail to look, sound or sing like Elvis. The tawdry “Renew Your Vows” churches. The ‘murcans on-masse revelling in an orgy of hedonistic escapism.

I am having difficulty working up any enthusiasm for the trip. The only appealing aspect is that old saying “What happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas – and pictures posted in S&S*”

Does anyone have any recollections of Vegas, real or imagined, first hand, second-hand or even third-hand anecdotes?
Is it an experience to miss or an experience never to be missed?

*May or may not be true depending on the quality of the photos, the Mods in S&S and how fat my belly looks at the time.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Vegas sucks IMO, sure, a walk up the strip is pretty cool. But overall, it's a load of casinos in the middle of the desert.

New York FTW. Most. Amazing. City. Ever.

It's threads like this that remind me that I have moved to a country not far removed from 'third world status' LMAO

You would be hard pressed to find a rental car without air conditioning in the States.

Yet to come across any cheap whores in Vegas ;)

If you never had an ounce of sense of gambling, then Las Vegas will be far greater than you had ever believed. The shows on offer are fantastic, now a showy kinda person? Neither was I till I went to see one of them, shows in Vegas are extraordinary. Dining out is delicious, if you do your homework before you go you'll gather a little list of places to eat out, make the buffet at the bellagio top of your list. Do you enjoy golfing? Vegas has beautiful golf courses and fabulous prices, there is more golf courses in Vegas than any other city I can think of. The magic and wonders of Vegas are visible everytime you open your eyes, every corner you turn and every door your pass through, gambling is a part of Vegas but it can offer you almost anything in the world that you want, they even have beaches!

I lived there for 6 months and visit twice a year, you can never have enough of Vegas, it's just one big buzz, everyone is there to have fun and marvel at the wonder. Don't miss out

Isn't that place just a bunch of buildings trying to be taller than one another jammed together, mixed with every person having a bigger ego than the one you have just passed?

I was in Vegas last summer. It is awesome. Lots of gambling and drinking (for free mostly!!!) and the hookers were great too. Its a wonderfull place. It's like Disneyland for adults that is funny of Minnie Mice that are willing to pleasure you for a small fee.

    Las Vegas = MAN PARADISE

Money is king, Gambling, Booze, Thick as sh1t women and if your horny enough loads of hookers. If you are Irish and anyway half decent you will score, think of it as a city full of Californian (mostly) women who would hang out at copper face jacks if in Ireland. I spent ten days there last year, I often wonder what kept me fuelled.

2 days is enough there. The place is great at first but the fakeness gets to you. I ran out of the place.

    ps
Vegas grayhound bus station at 1 am is not nice.
LA bus station at 4am is a million times worse.

I'm pretty sure that if any man goes to vegas in the company of a s/o then he's kinda missing the point of being there.

You should talk her out of it.

OP my girlfriend was being all hoity-toity about vegas aswell before we went and she put up many of the same arguments that you did.
We went anyway and we both loved it.
There is lots to see and do there, good food and cheap drink.
Some of the shows are suposed to be really good too, i regret not going to see O.
And you could always take a trip out to the hoover dam or the grand canyon.
All the big hotels have roller coasters, the ones on top of the stratosphere are a must if ur into that sort of thing.
The water show outside the bellagio is pretty cool aswell.
The only gambling I did was putting quarters into a touchscreen blackjack game that was embeded into the bar counter.
bits of it are tacky and the lights are OTT but thats exactly why it works.
there are plenty of citys in the world that you can walk down the main street and you may aswell be anywhere, not vegas tho, its one of a kind.
I'm looking forward to going back again with some money and not have to do the whole student budget thing.

    the seedy motels
Are you going on the cheap that you must stay in a "seedy motel?" The Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, Caesars, etc aren't exactly "seedy." They have some places there that make Nassau and Montego Bay look like a kip. Not even considering places like the Ritz Carlton. I heard they've slashed prices dramatically since the economy's been in the toilet. You'd typically get something very reasonable for the accommodation/amenities even in good times. They aim to drain your pockets elsewhere so don't need to take you to the cleaners for your room.

I was there for a week earlier this month and I have to say I pretty much hated it. Everything is overpriced, you won't need to visit the Casino to feel like your money is being lifted out of your pocket. The service was rubbish mostly and the people were insincere. Perhaps this is coloured by my stay at the Bellagio (I found the staff at the Rio far more friendly).

There were some cool things, like downtown, but mostly I was dissapointed.

Would recommend San Francisco instead; beautiful city, friendly people and there's plenty to see and do. The one show I saw there, Wicked, absolutely knocked the socks off the four shows I saw in Vegas too.

Vegas is worth a visit. Loads of other stuff within a few hours drive too.

Amerikay is one of the best places to visit. Of course it's not 'cool', but if you like to party it's right up there.

vegas is a place everyone should see at least once in their lifetime, some will love it, some will hate it, however if you go expecting to see seedy motels and neon i am afraid most of that died out with the mob, todays strip caters mostly to the very rich and those wanting to experience the lifestyles of britney, paris and lindsay for a few days with 5 star hotels and 5 star restaurants, clubs which are frequented by nba and movie stars, hotels with 15 acre pool areas, you can still find some of the older stuff you mentioned off strip but really a tourist shouldn't be walking in those areas

if you find las vegas overpowering or your 800 sq foot suite isn't big enough, then alot of americas best and most amazing scenery is within a few hours drive, you can go skiing on 12,000 foot mount charleston when it 90 degrees 30 miles away on the strip, death valley, grand canyon, lake mead, zion, bryce, canyonlands, monument valley all within easy reach of vegas
