37mpg was my average in a '94 xli, same engine.

Would vary big time on what type of driving you are doing, ie. city driving could see you go as low as 25mpg whereas if you are doing longer rural driving, you are probably looking at around the 35mpg mark.

around 40mpg if the engine's healthy.

i get around 42mpg from my 96 corolla saloon. the 96 model is slightly more efficient as it is revised for emissions.

That model Corolla is not very heavy and the 1.3 litre 16 valve engine is very nippy in them so it really depends on how heavy a right foot you have. On average you should be getting between 35mpg and 40mpg from one assuming it is in perfect working order.

To clarify: Heavy foot, 15 miles of country roads and 15 miles of city driving, ie 30 mile commute.
