Anyone heading to this at the weekend?
    Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2009
Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta will be held in Ros Muc in the heart of the Conamara Gaeltacht in Co. Galway from 29th May – 1st June 2009. This Gaelic football weekend has been on the road for many years now and the competition is held in a Gaeltacht area while other Gaeltacht teams come and compete and try to achieve a place in the football finals which are held on Bank holiday Monday.

Teams from all over Ireland and from London will descend on Ros Muc where the local GAA Club, Cumann Peile na bPiarsaigh, will host this wonderful sporting event in the West of Ireland this coming June bank holiday weekend.

The concept of the competition is a Football Tournament but with a twist, all sporting activities take place through the medium of Irish. This wonderful weekend brings together the various dialects in the Irish language and people from Donegal, Kerry, Cork, Waterford Meath and Galway Gaeltacht areas get to chat in a friendly and social environment.T

This coming June bank holiday weekend crowds will take over Ros Muc in the heart of the Gaeltacht as they take part in this tremendous sporting weekend.

Ros Muc is a very historic place with very rich culture, heritage and language and it is here that Irish Writer and Scholar Padraig Pearse lived, and it was while sitting outside his home in Ros Muc that he wrote most of his well known stories. Pearse Cottage is situated only a few hundred yards from the football pitch which will host the weekend’s main sporting events.During the weekend a marquee will be erected nearby and many social events, music , sean-nós dancing, sessions and singing will take place in the marquee and in the local pubs. Many other events will take place during this fun packed weekend, some events include local traditions such as a currach racing exhibition, tug of war, horseshoe throwing, pitch & putt, as well as hill walking, a tour of Pearse’s Cottage and selecting a cailín Gaelach.

Amongst the clubs that take part in the competition are clubs from various Gaeltacht areas all over Ireland which include, Rinn Ó gCuanach and An Sean Phobail from the Co. Waterford Gaeltacht, a team from Gaeltacht Ráth Cairn i Co. Meath, Piarsaigh na Dromaide and An Ghaeltacht from the Kerry Gaeltacht, Baile Mhúirne and Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh from the Cork Gaeltacht, Gleann Cholm Cille, Gaoth Dobhair and Cill Chartha from the Donegal Gaeltacht, Clubs from Thuar Mhic Éadaigh and Béal an Mhuirthead from the Mayo Gaeltacht, the local Conamara teams which include Micheál Breathnach, An Cheathrú Rua, Naomh Anna Leitir Móir, Carna - Caiseal, Rinn Mhaoile, An Spidéal, An Fhairche and of course the host team Cumann Peile Na bPiarsaigh from Ros Muc. #

Another team which will be crossing the Irish sea to attend are Móin Dearg all the way from London. For years now Móin Dearg attend this football competition and just barely missed out on a place in the finals of last year’s junior final when they lost out to An Rinn from Co. Waterford in the semi-final. An Rinn went on to win the junior competition during last year’s games which were held in Gleann Cholm Cille in Co. Donegal.

The weekend’s events will be covered by the media, some games will be broadcast live on TG4 while RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will give listeners a great insight as to how all the weekend events are shaping up, between live coverage on the games, analysis and interviews with major sporting figures during the three day event.

Cumann Peile na bPiarsaigh have been working hard for many years now in organising the biggest sporting weekend in the Irish language calendar, this is a very challenging but wonderful event to be hosting, so make your way to Ros Muc for a wonderful cultural weekend of football, music, dance and most importantly this is the perfect opportunity to hear all the various Irish language dialects from North, South, East and West.

Tá seans ann go mbeidh mise ann.

I presume TG4 will be doing live coverage of the weekend again this year?

EDIT: They will, but it's just the minor and senior finals on the Bank Holiday Monday.

I'll definitely be heading up up anyway. Can't wait! I missed out on the one last year unfortunately. We're staying in a house near a beach and the weather is supposed to be going to be great so if the football doesn't go too good we can always just head to the beach instead! :D

It mentions Ráth Cairn in the release, but there isn't a team in the fixtures. Do the teams have to be from clubs or will representatives from a particular ceantar do?

Not sure if anyone was back in Rosmuc for the competition at the weekend but must say that the club and the village done themsleves proud. Very well organised, some great matches, weather to die for and just a cracking atmosphere.
Would be nice to hear if anyone else was there.

I was there and had a great weekend, the only annoying thing was the local pub selling cans of Lager and Bulmers for €5 but luckly I'm a Guinness drinker!

Very well run and very friendly people a weekend to remeber for a long time!!

Yeah, the price of cans was abit steep. Strangley, the only people I heard complaining were the donegal and northern lads. I know when we travel to competitions and the like, we just pay whats to be paid and enjoy the craic. Was abit annoyed and some of the singing in the pub about the price of drink...a little disrespectful.
And bar the booing by the belfast lads during the Cailin Ghaelach competion on Sunday night, everyone was well behaved. First comortos ive been to in a long time where there hasnt been fighting (well, as far as I know).

Who won the junior and senior titles and how the Donegal teams fare out?

Aran Islands beat Na Piarsaigh in the Juniors and Ard a Ratha (Donegal) beat Carna-Caisel in the seniors

I was speaking to a guy from Kilcar last night and he wasn't too impressed at Ardara taking their title. :D

Chill Chartha lost to An Daingean by 4 points on Saturday, Chill Chartha were 5 points up at half time (could have been by more) but had a very poor second half but had a few goal chances and chould have won cant's believe An Daingean then lost to Cárna-Caiseal in the semis. Downings had to play twice on Saturday and with the heat that was in it no supprise thy lost the second match.

Chill Chartha ladies went a point up against Naomh Anna and lost 7.26 -0.01 (that the problem with ladies GAA in this comptition junior teams playing seinor sides i recall the same happening in glen last year to another local ladies side).

I suppose the reason for that is you can cross the border and buy the same cans for £1 or less, I would have no complaints about the GAA club charging that as I heard they got very little in grants for hosting this but when a family run pub dose it well that's a bit cheeky, especially in the current economic climate.
