Insuring a UK plate in Ireland

    Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered already - I searched.

Whats the shizzle with driving a UK registered car on Irish Roads. Will the Irish insurance companies insure them?

I ask because there is a noticeable increase on the number of uk plates on our roads. A lot of them don't look like tourists. Are these guys driving around without valid insurance? Are they a risk to the rest of us in that regard?

    Ta.

All will for a period (when importing it for example)

Not sure if they will insure it totally or if its only a temp change thing

Quinn and FBD will insure a UK reg indefinitely. I had a car with Quinn for a year on a UK reg and they just sent out the renewal at the end of the year so I would imagine they would have continued. I also know that FBD will do the same. Axa said they would do it for a while but didnt say how long.

Putting an Irish insurance disc up in a Uk reg car is like putting a big "Seize me!" sign in the window.

I laugh when I see people with the Irish disc up. I always kept my insurance cert and disc in the glove box when I was driving a UK reg on Irish insurance, never put up the disc.

Therefore you could try your luck at a checkpoint but if it wasnt working you could at least pull it out and prove you were insured. Worked too when I was pulled once, I said I was on back from the UK for a wedding and it worked, having the Irish disc up would have made it a bit more difficult.

I work for one the leading insurance companies starting with the letter A.;)
We have over 25,000 UK registered cars insured with us at any one time.
Basically the company turns a blind eye as long as they're bringing in money and increasing profits.Personally I think it's a disgrace and there should be some sort of legislation brought it where you are not allowed insure a foreign reg plate. One of my neighbours has been driving a UK reg car for over three years now.

Yes, it is a disgrace. The price of insurance and tax should be in the price of fuel. Think of all the useless time wasting it would save the Gards and pointless civil service jobs it get rid of. It'd get rid of the userous and extortionate insurance companies who ride us for extra profit which they spend on ad campaigns to guilt us out of claiming for compensation that they're legally bound to provide. It's a shocking disgrace.

    +1 ^

It's pee'ing me off big time to see all of these tax dodging people in uk cars on our roads.

I had a legit car in the UK and brougt it back with me last year. It cost me 1600 squids in the uk for a C280 with an MOT. The VRO here charged me c. 1400 to bring it with me.
    My Dad's now driving it.
