My aunts PC (Xp) is giving her trouble at the moment. She has an active and functioning internet connection but cannot get past the search results page on Google for some reason. She can also send & receive her e-mails on Outlook but cannot open any links within said mails.

I haven't had a chance to go and look at it myself yet but this is how she describes the problem. I'm presuming it's some kinds of over eager anti-virus but any other ideas would be helpful.

    Cheers.

you'll need to be more specific than can't get pass the Google results

    can she access other site
does it show any error / anything at else
    etc..

    Would need more info.
What exactly is happening when she clicks on a link?

Is she getting a page not displayed error, blank page or does Internet Explorer crash?

You could try doing a system restore, installing an alternative browser such as Firefox or updating to the latest version of Internet Explorer.

I had that problem too i think its caused by a virus what i had to do was copy and paste any links into the address bar. i know that doesnt actually fix your problem but its a way around it...

id go down the route of a spyware/malware scan , anti virus scan , make sure all programs are up to date before running them and as has been posted above , if she is using internet explorer , make sure it is updated to the latest version, and also download an alternitive browser and try that , mozilla firefox would be most peoples choice.

if you cant access sites to download these files and programs , you may need to do it elsewhere and transfer them to a memory stick and then onto your aunts pc from the memory stick.

    good luck.

Had this on a couple of peoples computers not so long ago. Was due to Spyware. Run anti-spyware/anti-malware. Should clear it up. Also run a virus check.

Explorer just gets stuck in a loop of trying to load the page, no other site can be accessed.

Firefox has the same problem on the machine. As I say I haven't actually seen it myself yet so just working off what she is telling me.

She tried a system restore and it didn't rectify the issue.

    I'll check and get back.

Gonna tell her to download AVG somewhere else and install it to see if it picks up anything.

    Cheers.

Malwarebytes kills most of this type off or superantispyware.
Sometimes the ip stack can become corrupted after virus removal winsock xp fix is a handy small program that fixes same.
