    Nothing will prevent stuff completely but I think common sense is a better solution than any software.

    Verify the sources of software, programs, files you download. etc

    Don't use windows.

    Far too many vulnerabilities give an intruder complete control of the system. Patches to prevent this are released every few months.

    Get a hardware firewall, almost all routers will offer a basic level of security that will stop people probing your PC.

    Use firefox with no-script to avoid drive by downloads

    GO to www.grc.com do shields up test.THIS TELLS YOU IF YOU HAVE CERTAIN PORTS OPEN which may be used to hack your pc.Upgrade to ie8 and use firefox noscript.
    Switch off ports that are vunerable eg port 5000 all the info is on the website.
