I just did a google search there and read some horror stories with paint dripping on clothes and wellies sticking together and thought I better get some advice off people who've actually done it :)

I'm hoping on just getting some cheap wellies, and spray painting them black and gold ! Any experiences or advice to share ?

I tried to do this last year and it really didnt work out well. I painted a pair of wellies in acrylic paint and it just broke and cracked off the wellies everytime a took a step. It looked cool at the beginning but they were wrecked within a few minutes and i left trails of paint chips everywhere i went!

This year i sanded down the wellies with a low grade sandpaper, painted my design on with acrylic and then covered them with clear silicone. I havent completely finished the pair yet but so far its working really well for me. The paint underneath still cracks when the boot bends but the silicone keeps it in place and the cracks cant be seen when the boot goes back into its normal position. The silicone bends so walking wont be a problem and its waterproof so it wont go all gooey when it gets wet like other things might and the wellies wont stick together.

If you just spray paint the boots you'll probably have the same problem i had last year and it will just crack away once its dry. Sanding will help the paint grip the boot better but you can do a little test spray before sanding because it might not be needed. If you want to cover them in silicone it really helps to rub it on using hot saopy water (the hotter the better so as hot as you can stand) and do it in a well ventilated area.

Its really frustrating how little there is on the internet about how to properly paint wellies and this is the only way i've thought of that will would work, other then buying one of those paint your own wellies kits they have for kids or possibly silicone based paints but thats really only a theory and both of those can be quite expensive.

Oof! Sorry about the long message. Hope it helped though. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. And let me know how the boots turn out or if you find any other methods that work!

hey i did my own wellies for oxegen this year i was so sick of having the same as everyone else. anyways i didnt paint mine but i got a plain pink pair in dunnes, i turned the top of them down and used fabric glue and glued on some really nice flowery material i got from hickeys. (its curtain material i think)
it worked really well, now they got dirty but i'm just gna wash
the boots part and recover the tops with fresh material. all fresh for elctric picnic

got loads of compliments about them.

oh and its great for anyone who has larger calves, i dunno about other ppl but after 15 years of irish dancing i cant find a proper pair that fit in any highstreet stores.

if ye still wanted to do your own design you could use fabric paints on plain material.

    hope this helps!!!
