I wouldn't rate the Yamahas or the Alesis at all as monitors.

To my ears the lowend is unreadable with any of those speakers (that is, hard to make decisions on) though good fun to listen to !

I see the Genelec 8020 are now with in your price range and I'd much prefer them.

My experience is that a lot of smaller speakers with ports (the bass hole on the back) can be very confusing on the bass end however the Genelec bass port design doesn't seem to suffer that.

Actually I'm mistaken .... the Genelecs are priced individually .... sorry!

I think most people here will steer you towards the HS50's.

We recently had a game of soggy biscuit over the same topic.. LOL :D

Thanks. I figured a pair of Yamahas would be good bang for buck.

Might be a silly question but I'm currently using an Audigy Platinum Pro (yes thats on the list to be upgraded) and I'm trying to figure out how to connect the monitors. They don't appear to connect by source -> speaker 1 -> speaker 2. Do I need to split stereo mini-jack at the output to mono jack at each speaker?

Thanks for the input already! Can't keep up.
Nice to see the praise on the Yamahas. Point taken Paul but if there's nothing else worth jumping on in the price range they may be the ones for me to get going

Yamaha's ordered :) along with a Y minijack to mono jack cable which should do the job.

Will let you know how it goes.

Off to see what I can dream of for next on the shopping list...

    Cheers

I like the alesis M1 Mk2's. Good monitor for the price. I find Genelecs far too prickley sounding, I'm sure they are grand an all just not for me.

You should also check out KrK monitors.
