Query about driving in England

Going to be working in England for about a year and I was just wondering what the position is regarding bringing a car over there. Is it ok to just drive it around or do you have to inform someone and whats the position regarding insurance. Does your irish insurance cover you or is it dependent on your policy.

p.s. do you need an international licence or does the irish do?

    thanks

It's best to inform your insurance company that you are moving.
Your Irish insurance will cover so, you wont need to take out any extra cover.
You also don't need to change your license as it was issued within EU.

Not sure about either of that mate.

Most insurance policies here will only cover you for 30days at most outside of Ireland.

I think the Brits are more sticklers on driving licences you might I say again might have to get a UK licence.

No. EU licences are as valid there as they are over here, i.e. until they expire.

I've been living in the UK for 18 months now driving on an irish licence - its absolutely fine and incurs no insurance premium (with my insurance company anyway) over a UK licence.

You can use an Irish licence ( and I mean a proper licence not a learner permit ) until it expires.

If you bringing an Irish reg car into the UK , make sure the tax etc are up to date . If they are out of date , you may get stopped and fined , or the car taken off you . Also make sure you have an NCT for the same reason

    Suggestion:-

If you are in the UK for 12 months , why not buy a car over there , drive it for the year then import it avoiding the VRT ?

I'd buy a car over there. I did it myself. Much cheaper and better etc.
However, I think that your insurance company will insure you for no more than 6 months (or weeks, can't remember) over there before demanding that you insure the car in that jurisdiction.
My UK insurer would only insure me in Ireland for a certain period when I brought my UK car back with me.
    Best call your insurer.

Yes that happened to me , I had 3 months , and even then the cover was reduced to TPF&T

You can drive on your Irish License, I have been using mine for the past 5 years. You also can't get points put on your Irish license (not that you should do anything untoward anyway!)
Also, after the 12 months were up, you could change your irish license for a UK one (just in case you decided to stay). The UK license can also be used to drive in Ireland.

You can only drive your Irish car on Irish plates for 6 months in any 12 month period. More info here:
