I was running today around some playing fields near my house. It was a glorious day and there was no one training on the fields. I was there because I am giving my legs a break from the hard stuff. Anyway, thats besides the point.

While i was running, about 2km in, three baby swallows started flying around me, in circles. It was the strangest thing? At one point one of them even zoomed through my legs!!

    It was amazing!:D

I know this really doesnt have a whole lot to do with running or anything but I wanted to share!

Did anything similar even happen to anyone here?

Yep has happened to me many times. Swallows are renowned for it. I know a lady who is terrified by the circling swallows, she freaks out.

Couple of times I've had a skanger try to keep up with me. It's shameful for them that they can't keep up with me at the end of a 10 mile+ run.

Neighbours of mine don't control their dog and let it do its own thing. One day he followed me on a run... all 21 miles or so. I was a bit peeved as I had to do a minder job on the dog whenever cars were passing on the backroads. It would have been a bit of a problem if the dog had decided half way through the run (in the middle of nowhere) that it didn't want to go any further. I said it to the neighbour afterwards and she laughed it off.

My inlaws' dog followed me for a run a few years back, he stuck with me for about 5 miles. He then ran in to a field and hasn't been seen since!!

Seems to happening quite a lot. I've twice had a dog following me for 11 miles on a training run.

Was running down a secluded lane with only a handful of houses on either side. Next thing a giant bloody wolfhound (looked more like a horse) appeared from nowhere and started to give chase..He kept at me for ages. Needless to say that recovery run turned into a full blown speed session!

Same thing happens up on the race-course in galway, I noticed them at it for the last three summers now. I suspect while running through the grass there are flies being launched up or startled and they are feeding on them. Or they could be just having some fun seeing at they spend the day flying

Over the last three days I've had one fly down over my right shoulder at the same spot on the course, like 3 inches from my head! Its pretty cool alright.

They don't quite run with me, more away from me, but I usually have the company of deer and bunny rabbits when I'm running in the forest beside me. Lifts the spirits.

You're forgetting the cows:) We ran part of the Wicklow Way which crosses grassland, and came upon about 10 head of cattle, who ran on ahead of us. We were running slowly uphill, but any time one of these dumb beasts veered off the path, he'd frantically look over at the herd, and dash back to join them. It was a good two miles before we lost them.

I've also been chased down a field by stampeding cattle, I was madly running through puddles and muck, the cows gaining on me, in the lashing rain, when the farmer turned into the field in his big tractor. I gave him a quick wave as I ran by, his slack-jawed look of astonishment will stay with me forever.:D

Happened to me this morning, twas incredible :D. I was running around the local racecourse. I did 4 laps and everytime I got to the back of the course, 4 swallows would follow me for about 1/4 of a mile, sweeping past my legs and swooping around my head. It was so cool.

Speaking of unexpected running partners I know a guy that spent over an hour running with Craig Mottram and hadnt a clue who he was and blamed the fact that Mottram had a baseball cap on and thats why he didnt recognise him. That and being astonishingly thick

If any of you do a lot of cycling, you know hearing a dog bark is bad news.

They storm out of the house and chase you about 1km down the road, where they seem to hit an invisible barrier and stop! The problem is, it's hard to outcycle a dog, especially when going up a hill. They can sprint really fast, but can't hold it up for long. If they catch you they try and eat your shoes or legs. Great interval training really :p
