Hi there, its interesting I was studying comic collecting today when preparing a landing page for my new hobby social network and I discovered it is an extremely popular and valuable hobby. A 1938 addition of action comics is worth $350,000. I wonder do any of the comic collectors in here know the main criteria that determines the value of a comic?

350k for a little story magazine, christ on a bike, I could spent that much money on something even less worthwhile, actually that sounds like a challenge:eek:

There are alot of factors that effect the value of a comic. Age of the comic - Golden age [1930's to late 40's] are the only ones with any major value. Condition of the comic [you can get your comics graded]. Size of the print run - comics with a short print run are of more value then ones from a larger print run - and first print runs like with books are of more value then later print runs. The content - comics featuring first appearance of a popular character [like superman, batman etc etc] or a major moment in a characters history [loved one dieing for example] Signed comics hold more value if there is some proof of the signature [like a certificate of authenticy] And of course it will always only be worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I think I read somewhere that the first 100 issues of captain america were burnt in a warehouse, making them almost impossible to get (limited supply)? It might have been another publication he was in, I don't know.

Comic prices are based the same way other collector items are - number available, significance (characters 1st appearance, death, marriage), special editions (where the cover or style of the issue is different than normal eg. Wolverine #50 with a 3 cut cover).

You'll find though that the prices tend to fluctuate over time based on the amount of activity an individual comic is going through. There are websites that keep an eye on how much they're being bought and sold, and adjust prices accordingly. Eg. If a certain significant issue isn't being bought/sold much between collectors, the price will go up because it's seemingly harder to get.

And don't forget that Action comics gave most of DC's most memorable characters, and I think the one you're talking about was the first ever time Superman appeared in print.
