tax back for home help

    Hi,

I'm wondering if I am entitled to claim any tax back on the provision of a carer for my mother who is elderly and in poor health. She lives on a farm with one of her sons and recently suffered a stroke. The medical people recommended that when she was sent home that we should try to get someone to help her as she was in difficulty with some things ie dressing and cooking. She suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritisis and since the stroke she has no real strength in her hands which flare up from time to time.

There have been a lot of cutbacks recently as I am sure you are aware and there has been no one to come and see her in her own home not even after she fell in January and had a hip replacement so we decided to employ someone ourselves from the rural community care network.

We had been told that we would be entitled to tax relief of 41% on this but from what I was reading on various forms belonging to the revenue my mum would have to be

    A) totally incapacitied (HK1 form) which she isn't

    B) suffer from serious illness and employ qualified nurses on advice of medical practioner to provide constant care (Med1) and we are providing a qualified carer to look after our mother for 5 days per week for a few hours as we are all working Mon to Fri

I am worried that this excludes my mother as we know that going forward more care/nursing help will be needed but I don't definetly know if I can claim tax on this.We were proposing covering the cost by four of us contributing to cover the cost of care. The guidelines seem to be quite strict and it would appear that she won't qualify for a home care package as the farm income such as it is would count against her as well as her son living with her.

I suppose I will contact the revenue to get the low down.Any ideas?
