Both keys - same problem. All other functions work on the key for doors.

    Any point checking fuses?

Not sure if this helps but I had the same problem with my BMW. Apparently the lock had been put inot valet mode. Used so that only the key can open the boot. Try turning the to a dfiiferent position. ie. If the slot is horizontal. put it into the vertical position. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the rear boot actuator thats at fault. Common failure on certain Vw and Audi models. Went on my Passat, got part at dealer for 30 euro and fitted it myself. ill see can I dig out a link....

here is a link to a "How to" on a good VAG fourm, you might have to register (its free) to view the thread.

The model they covered is an A4 avant but the saloon will be much the same.

hi all, I have the same problem with my 2004 A4 Avant - the boot wont open all of time, you can hear it trying to open but its basically stuck. I asked around and it seems like its a lazy solenoid. Went to Audi and they sold me an actuator part 4B9962115C (€56 including VAT)

Question - does anyone know if the solenoid and actuator is the same thing or is it something different?
Also, anyone know somewhere in sth Dublin to get it fitted?
    cheers

The boot would not lock at all if that was gone? Happened to me recently.

EDIT: SDP Motors sourced it from Park Motors for me and fitted it.

    thanks balloba...

The boot will lock allright but it will only open now and then. I can open it from the inside but essentially it only opens 1/5 times. Is the solenoid the same as the actuator balloba?

Actuator gone or wire going to the actuator is broken going in to the boot lid near the hinge very common with VW/Audi.

It's all the one part as far as I am aware. The part that had been in my car appeared to be from a breakers yard, not much point putting in a used part in this instance. It'll likely fail again soon unless you use a new part. Fitting seems trivial but my car was in for a service anyway, google for instructions.

My saloon has the exact same problem,

I replaced the actuator today and it made no odds at all, the boot will still only open with the key.

Anyone have any other ideas what might be causing this??

    Thanks

Could be a broken wire in the loom where it runs from the car into the boot door. Pull pack the rubber ducting and have a look.

    Hi George

I pressed the button on the key and held a circuit test in the plug going into the actuator and once the button was pressed the tester lighted up.....so I don't think it could be broken wire ?

once the actuator is getting power ?

But the actuator doesn't move when you connect it and press the button? Was it a brand new part you fitted?

    Yes that is exactly it
    nothing at all happens

yep brand new part from the main dealers today...

I noticed the part number was slightly different though

    orginal was something like 8E5 962 115

    new part was 8E5 962 115 B

But fittings everything was the exact same could this be affecting it ??

I would suspect a wiring problem still. You really need to load test the circuit. It takes virtually no power to light an led on a tester, it takes much more to operate the actuator. So it could still be a problem with the wiring.

Thanks George I'll look into it

A multi meter would be the right job for it I'd imagine.
