hi i got my car (02 1.4 Golf 70K miles) serviced and the mechanic mentioned that as i would need my timing belt replaced. He quoted me €350, i also rang another place and they quioted €500.

i suppose my question is, is €350 a fair price?

    thanks in advance

350 is about par for the course for one to be honest

I paid about €320 two years ago on a 1.6 passat which was a particularly tricky one to do, the whole bumper had to come off. It doesn't sound outrageous, I don't think you'd do a huge pile better but maybe golf owners will give a better indication of what they paid...

    €350 is very reasonable IMO.

Depends on whether its just the belts that are being changed or if all other associated bits (tensioner, pulley, water pump etc.) are also being changed. I wouldn't have thought you'd get everything done for 350.

cheers for the reponse, i rang around a few more places and 350 does seem to be the cheapest.

its a guy in monkstown Mr Joe Byrne, i have had my car serviced there a couple of times now and have been very happy with it so i can pass on his details if anyone wants them.

as far as i know its 2 belts tensioners and water pump plus labor. apparently the particular model of golf is known for the problem

    thanks

€350 for a golf is very good because as stated the front bumper must be removed as there aint much space to work with. I remeber I paid €260 for a 99 opel astra from a main dealer a few years back.

You don't have to take the front bumper off a Mk 4 Golf or any other Golf for that matter to do a timing belt. That only has to be done for the Passat and even at that, it isn't the big job that everyone thinks it is...

OP, 350 is a good price. Also ask to see the old parts and ask exactly what they do. I always recommend that folks use should use these opportunities to educate themselves a bit.
