    Hi there,

I worked for the 1st 4 months of the year and am now heading off travelling at end of june for 18months. Ive heard that there is a way i can claim a tax refund for the 4 months now,if i sign a form saying im going abroad and wont be working in ireland for the remainder of the tax year...is this true?

If so, can anybody direct me as to how to go about this please.

Also, is it possible to get a tax refund on rent paid to parents...i give them €200 a month, cash in hand. If so,how do i infact prove that i pay them rent?

    Thanks in advance

If you send a letter into your local district they may be able to apply your tax credits. Depends on the district- sometimes they tell you to wait to the end of the year for the refund.

in relation to your parents- the Revenue have clamped down on this- if you want to claim this rent relief then your parents will have to register as landlords with the PRTB, declare and pay tax on this income for you to get the rent credit.

EDIT- I see you are leaving at end of June for 18 months- you will be non resident for next year so split year relief will apply- google split year relief and you'll get the low down on it.

My advice would be to leave the tax claim until you return, its less hassle and you will probably be broke after the trip and appreciate the few quid! :-)

Yeah, you can claim it back when you leave.
I can't remember the name of the form but look for recently uneployed. You will need to send in part 2 and 3 of your p45 so make sure you get them the day you finish work as it will save alot of hassle.

This is incorrect and sounds like what you do when looking for jobseekers benefit?

All you have to do is fire a letter into your local tax district outlining your situation and you wish to claim split year relief and have your annual credits retrospectively applied to trigger a refund of PAYE paid.

    Thanks for the replies lads.

1 final question, if say I was to fill out the relevant forms for a tax refund now and leave all my p45 etc stuff here with parents, is it as simple as them submitting it,gettin the cheque(hopefully!) and lodging it to my bank a/c, or do i need to be in the country?

Thats exactlty what I did but the tax office will lodge it into your account directly.

    Right, am i missing something?

I got a new job in february, only stayed there a month, got emergency taxed €70. anyway i left, other reasons.

I recently started another new job, after leaving the other one, gave them my p45 from the february job etc, but got emergency taxed fifty quid this week due to whatever, forgetfulness maybe, anyway, regardless,

so how do i go about claiming my tax back for the feb job and this current one? isnt the p50 form only for unemployed people? i dont understand

You need to register for MyAccount (google this) and add your employment there. Once your tax credits are issued, the tax overpaid should come back to you in your payslip.

If it doesn’t, you will need to phone Revenue to ask why.

    That's done with months/years.
my employment is already registered, usually the employer does this for you.
