R4 cards are long obsolete. The R4 team stopped making them some time ago.

No support. No firmware upgrades. No microSD-HC support. They freeze with an increasing number of newer games.

My guess is that the cards on offer (v.2?) are clones or old stock. Either way I would stay clear.

The same place has DSTT cards which I have found to be very good, even using 8Gb TF cards. I have done alot of cards for friends and family and have even managed to salvage dead clone TT cards. I have had dead R4s and R4 clones as well but have never found a successful fix for them.

dealextreme will ship you a DSTT & and 8Gb card for less than the cost of that R4.

Neither card R4 or DSTT will work with a DSi by the way.

DX, although they have their problems from time to time are fairly open about what people post on the product reviews/forums.

A quick search there should point you in the right direction. I know there is a DSTTi card that reported works on EU DSi consoles.

Nothing really future proof at the moment for sure tho for the DSi: DS Anti-Piracy Software measures due by Christmas

From my research and all that from youtube and many DS sites, it seems that the R4i-SDHC in the red box works with the DSi

What a load of bull this guy clearly has no idea what he's on about. R4 are still being made, you can get the v3 here and it works fine with SDHC. If you have a DSi and need an R4 get an R4i here and it will work fine. Look up facts before you post nonsense.

To be honest he is kinda teling the truth.

Legend is that the company that produced the original R4 (back in 2007) was bought by a company that was a part of Samsung.

Samsung didn't like what was going on so closed R4 production.

So technically nobody can get a genuine R4, correct.

However, the theory that clones are a poor replica of the original just is not the case, the newer versions of the R4's do not even attempt to clone them, they are far far superior to the original cards.

All clones have issues, as did the original R4, they all have workarounds too.

I havent had a backup yet that didn't work 100%.

Perhaps I could have made my points clearer but thanks to ch750536 for pointing out that I do have some idea what I'm talking about.

My experience of non-original R4 cards has been bad so perhaps my opinion is clouded. I got two original cards for my kids and never had any issue with them.

However, I got a batch of 10 "R4 Advance" cards for friends and family which turned out to be poor clones. Non worked at all. These were replaced and all but one of the 10 worked but not with original r4 firmware.

The card the OP linked to does no appear to be one of the newer versions judging by the photo at least and will probably only work with a 2Gb card max.

A genuine DSTT from DX/VolumeRate/FocalPrice is better value and will work with 8Gb TF cards.

DX are selling the DSOnei which is DSi compatible and supports SDHC. On top of the ability to upgrade the OS by copying a new one onto your flash card same as all the other homebrew carts it comes with it's own firmware flasher for the cart itself which presumably means they can stay one step ahead of any DSi firmware changes to combat the homebrew scene. Whether they'll actually bother to do it or not is another story though ;) On the downside, the interface is moonshell based so it's not user friendly if you don't already know your way around.

i have to say i got a r4 sdhc from http://www.consolemodz.com got it next day and only cost 13 euro in total so i was well happy with that, think they have dstt for same price too

I know i'm off topic, in an all ready off topic thread, but is there one definitively superior DS card and where can it be bought at a reasonable price?

There were a load of complaints about this crowd on the nintendo forum abou them selling DSTT clones as real. I'd advise staying well away.

It allows you to use homebrew software and play backed up copies of your games.

The acekard is a pretty good card and inexpensive on dealextreme. The acekard 2.1 is currently going for around 11 dollars and the acekard 2i for the DSi is about 14 dollars.

It also supports 3rd party open firmware. One such firmware is AKAIO and is far superior.

The DSTT is also another cheap alternative. Unfortunately there are alot of clones going around and they will lock up on newer firmware unless you hack it.

I would avoid the R4 at all costs. Yes they're clones, most aren't even clones of the original R4 anymore, they just use the name in the hope to sell. Some of the newer games require hacks to function on these I've found.

I prefer to buy my games and since I'm going to college in september to do game development i don't really agree with downloading ROMs, if you buy one just use it for homebrew!
I guess we cant remove this from bargain alerts since the R4 its self isnt illegal...ah well:rolleyes:

Need some advice on Nintendo Ds Lite. Recently bought an R4 Revolution for DS (NDSL/NDS) with 8Gb SDHC from mymemory.org. Downloaded the R4 firmware (v. 1.25) and transfered the firmware to the SDHC. Inserted the SDHC into the Revolution reader and slotted it into the DS and turned it on...and ...nothing!
When checking instructions for firmware installation for the SDHC on different websites I found conflicting information. All I need (I hope) is specific instructions concerning installation.
When I turned on the DS the loading screen was bypassed but no menus followed - just blank screen.
I'm sure this is off topic and the relevant instructions are probably in a separate sub-forum but I'd appreciate any advice.

you are downloading the wrong firmware. Get it off www.r4sdhc.com version 2.

Followed your advice but still no luck. When I turn on the ds lite it goes to "Loading" screen and stays there. I'm putting the firmware straight onto the SDHC. There are no folders on it previously. Does it need to be formatted? Advice appreciated

copy all the games from the chip to a folder in your desktop, put the sd chip back in the adaptor and into the computer, format it to fat32 and try again.

try formatting it to FAT32, and reloading the SW. If that fails, return it to mymemory, they are good with returns

Any Irish websites selling cards that happen to take laser?

I know memoryc.ie used to do them but it looks like everything is discontinued now.

i don't want to put the mockers on you, but that 'loading' screen is what i got continuously with the clone R4s I had. All 10 did the same. Even cards that appeared to work at first only lasted a couple of plays.

if your TF card is genuine, which should be the case, then the issue is most likely with the cart. does the cart accept SDHC cards? the standard R4 doesnt. Some of the later ones including clones do, but you will need to use the firmware appropriate to the cart.

i presume you mean mymemory.com or .co.uk?? .org doesnt exist.

every possibility that mymemory got a batch of dodgy R4s.

    Hi all,

I was about to buy 2 Supercard DSOne1 cards from Dealextreme.com and noticed the following message on the page where they display the product info.

    ***Important Information Before Purchasing***
Since Nintendo released the new upgrade edition V1.4 for Nintendo DSi console, due to the technical problem and all game card needs period of time to upgrade, this item is NOT ABLE to compatible with the V1.4 Nintendo DSi consoles, so if you have upgraded your Nintendo DSi console to the newest V1.4 edition, please wait and keey an eye on our game cards, we will update the description once any upgraded game cards received from the suppliers.

Is this correct? I thought the DSOnei cards were designed so that future firmware upgrades wouldn't be a problem in so far as the Supercard guys would issue a revised OS forthe card which you could flash onto it and bingo you're back in buisness. Can anyone give me a heads up on what the correct story is here? I want to buy two more cards for some friends who just got new DSi's but not if the cards won't work on the new firmware. BTW, how can I check the firmware version on a DSi?

    Cheers,

    Fish
