Tipping in Poker Tournaments ?

    Hi All.

I am an online player and am fairly new to live poker and live tournaments.

    My question is :

Do i really have to leave a tip if i finish high in a live tournament ?

I personally do not like doing this as live tourneys these days are barely beatable as it is, with the relatively high entry fee/rake (as compared to online) and the lowish number of players.

I understand tipping in cash games, and that is fine.

But tipping in tourneys seems silly and probably turns the tourney for many players from a positive or neutral EV proposition to a negative EV proposition.

    Thoughts please ?

Thoughts - Don't be so tight.

Lol, Throwing even €20 to be kept back for dealers is grand and not going to break the bank, If most players do it all adds up and doesn't exactly add to tournys being a '' negative EV proposition '' .

    Oh yeah and lol.

EDIT: Obviously its bad karma not to aswell and dealers will deliberately deal you bad beats.

Are you a Cavan man do ya wash yer tea bags and use twice
nothing is compulsory like you dont have to wipe your arse but most people do
dealers for the most part are very good in dublin and if those who deal tournaments are not getting any tips they will be asking to be on the cash tables easier for dealers to learn by dealing donkaments first.

If you think about tipping in a cash game you might win ten pots and still go home skint at least if u win or are second or third in a tourney your guaranteed a profit so a tip shouldnt really hurt.

I generally tip 5% if i win 1k i give them 50 2k 100 etc rake for tournaments for what we get in dublin esp the fitz is excellently priced.

The end of month you get a huge quality feed 2 desserts if your greedy and dealers for up to 10 or 11 hours for 20 euro reg tell me thats not value for money?

The cards are random, so the bad Karma arguement means nothing.

I feel that dealers are paid well enough for what is a basic job.
If they dont like it, then leave. That is the free market.

I play poker to make money, not to pay the wage bills of casinos.

I imagine you are playing 50euro tourney's and they are for leisure and enjoyment rather than making a living or consistent profit...that being the case you should be able to afford to tip. Not sure why you have this attitude...the tournament dealers are doing the same job as the cash dealers.

If I had to guess your playing style it would be weak-tight:D

    What a jackass post.

Yet again by a "new poster".

Do people never get bored of trolling?!

Also if you think live donkaments are only neutral or negative ev then you must suck at poker.

    Re-read what I wrote.

I said that poker-tourneys are negative EV for MANY players, not necessarily for ME.

Of course, it must be negative EV for many players , other wise it wouldnt be positive EV for others.

Tip whatever you feel is fair. If you dont think a tip is necessary dont tip. Dont feel pressurised into it.

For a low limit/micro limit game what's the norm or a fair tip.

Is it the norm per winning pot/big pot or per game?

Im new to this sorry and dont want to feel like a twat at a table

I normally wouldn't close these type of threads, but it seems the OP has no interest in having his mind changed by his reply in post #4, so therefore is not needing to have any more points made to him on this issue.

Reasons to tip in a tournie:
    1. Tournie dealers are not well paid at all.
    2. They have to deal to ignorant people at times, quite possibly those with hygiene problems.
    3. They provide a service that the registration fee barely (if at all covers).
    4. Tips go to the dealers not the house

    Reasons not to tip
    1. Dealers/Staff were rude or bad.
    2. You did not finish in the top 3, or did not make any real profit.
    3. You are too tight to realise why it is more than polite to do so.
