You need one for the initial set up.

You don't need a landline for Sky+,you may have to pay an initialisation fee of €37.50 though.
Contact your local agent,he'll sort you out..

I got my Sky+HD box installed without a phoneline, all working okay until I went to enable the 'Remote Record' facility (ability to set recordings over the internet). It looks for a phone line, and fails.

Sky say that there's no way to get it to work without a phone line - this from a one-liner email from them, so I don't know if perhaps there's a more elaborate method available.

But anyway, you don't need a phoneline for the installation

You don't have to have one but, as Franksm said, you can't do remote record or Sky Box office etc. A phoneline-less installation is also 37.50 extra.

the 37.50 fee for not having a phone line is gone. two people i know have got brand new sky plus installs in my for 50 euros, with neither of them having a landline.- no other fee

Why do you get charged for no phone line at installation if it is not really needed? except for Remote Record. When we originaly got Sky there was no problem like this.
Also why is it €37.50, seems an odd price.

Was just thinking, there is a phone line socket at the other end of the living room that is not in use, so if I just got a really long piece of phone line, ran it across the lenght of the room, into the back of the new SKY+ box when it is been installed, took it out again when the installer left, then I wouldn't have to pay the €37.50 right?
I really never had a need for a phone line connection in all the 8 years I have had SKY now.
