Claiming back medical expenses from revenue

    Hi folks,

Have been browsing around and looking at old posts and I wonder if somebody could confirm that I'm correctly understanding what I can claim back in prescription costs from last year.

I pick up a monthly prescription that would cost a couple of hundred quid each month if it wasn't for the drugs payments scheme. I have a receipt somewhere for a €66 out-patient charge as well. So, can I claim back tax relief on the expenses that I paid last year (€90 X 11 months and 1 X €66, i.e. 41% back on expenses of €1056)?

On the medical expense of €66, yes, but I didn't think you you could claim on the pills when you're getting money through the drug payment scheme. You'd be better off asking in the shiny new Taxation forum though.

You can claim for the prescriptions, max of €90 per month.

Ah, didn't know about the taxation forum - thanks for that

AFAIK, if you haven't already claimed for the drugs/visit via one channel then you can claim relief from Revenue. You will need to keep all documentation for 7 years in case of audit.

I'll move the thread to the Taxation forum, where you should get more definite answers.

You can claim for unreimbursed medical expenses.

So if they were refunded under the drugs payment scheme or a health insurer then you cannot claim tax relief on them.

All non reimbursed medical expenses can be claimed against PAYE paid.
