high SPF for face?

i'm pale and prone to burning. wondering what do others use in the summer and on holidays? do most people get by with the SPF15 thats in most face creams? or do people wear their regular sunscreen on their face?? or do people know of good high spf creams specifically for face?

last summer in the states i mostly used boots soltan SPF 50 for face, but i got a LOT of blackheads (some of which are still with me). after a month or so of that i switched to Philosophy Hope in a Jar SPF 20, which was better for my skin, but still quite greasy (dumped it once i got home because it just didn;t make my skin feel nice, despite spending more on it than any other moisturiser i'd bought before). at the moment i use olay for sensitive skin spf15, and its grand on cloudy days. but yesterday in dublin was gorgeous weather in dublin and i spent all day from about 3pm outside, and now my skin feels burned even though it doesn't look it really. about to go to italy for a week though, so i need to sort it out.

so anything in the below 30 euro range that has over SPF 20 and won't give me blackheads even with prolonged use??
    thanks!

i heard really bad things about that stuff - boots won't stock it because it only provides UVB protection and doesn't provide UVA protection (the one that causes skin cancer and wrinkles), apparently its just like using a sunbed

Clinique cityblock. It's SPF 50 I think and costs about 25 euro. I use it instead of suncream on my face in the summer and never get burnt. It's never had any negative effects on my skin either and I've fairly sensitive skin.

EDIT: Just seen there,it comes in SPF 25 and SPF 40 version. I guess I have the 40 one. It's a bit cheaper than I thought too.

I just use suncream tbh, very pale skin also. It's excellent for your skin and cheaper than a lot of face creams with SPF 15. SPF 15 isn't very much when you consider how little cream you'd put on your face. I like the spray suncreams rather than the traditional cream ones, they feel much lighter. Maybe they'd be less greasy?

I use an excellent product called hamiltons which comes from Australia and I heard two leading skin specialists talk about it on the radio recently. I got a lesion on my leg last year which thankfully turned out to be benign and the specialist told me not to use either P20 or Parasol. He also recommended Hamiltons so I bought it last week and used it yesterday, found it brilliant and there is one for the face, quite reasonably priced too. You can only buy it in some chemists.

thanks! hamiltons sounds really good, do you wear it just by itself or would you need to use your regular moisturiser under it? i use No. 7 protect and perfect sometimes, maybe that could go under it and help with providing some of the extras sun screen by itself might not give..
i'll have a look around town for it - is there anywhere you know of in dublin city center that definitely has it?

That specialist doesn't know his arse from his elbow! P20 is dangerous stuff - it only protects from sunburn, it doesn't block the UVA rays which cause skin cancer - i.e. what you specifically want to avoid.

P20 isn't real sunblock, it's for people who want to get a tan without burning, and don't give two hoots about getting cancer.

Dermalogica also do an SPF30 booster product, a drop of which you mix in with your moisturiser or it can be used on it's own.

It works very well. Clinique cityblock is excellent though, and they've really improved the formula!!! You can get it with a slight tint too!!!

Think you read that wrong Etho!

P20 gives me very bad heat rash.

Shiseido do a good face and body sunscreen in factor 50+. Dunno about the price though.

I am very pigment-challenged too. Last week I bought MAC Prep&Prime (SPF 50) which a couple of ladies on Boards recommended to me and am finding it great so far. I pop it on over my moisturiser (it's just a white cream) and under my make up if I'm wearing any. It functions as a primer as well as a sunblock (though I didn't buy it for the primer side of things, just needed a high SPF as these 15/20 options are useless to me), having said that have definitely noticed a marked difference around the old porous schnozz area. Very impressed.

Do not and I mean do not use P20. My first every holiday abroad (Portugal) about 11 years ago I was covered in P20 was out in the sun for literally about 20 mins next thing I know I can barely move so go into the shade and turns out I'm literally like a lobster and I couldn't move. Long story short I spent the 2 weeks of my holiday watching TV, eating take-aways, and sleeping and I was in pain doing all three. Doctors said it must have been something to do with the P20 itself.

And to this day 11 years on I have to wear factor 50 (60 when it's available) all over my body as most likely a direct result of P20. I hope to invest in going to see a dermatologist soon and see if the extent of the damage is still there, etc...

Personnally I only use Boots Soltan as well nothing else goes up to 60 with the exception of Rock afaik and that's like putting cement on your body.

You can use Hamiltons on its own or under your moisturiser. Dont think you can buy it in the bigger outlets but your local chemist should stock it. Just check out the chemists in your locality.

I have a really good Simple face moisturiser that is factor 50 - got it last year for when I was going on holidays. If you can find it, I would highly recommend it - I have very sensitive skin and this didn't affect my skin at all, didn't get burnt, and it wasn't very expensive at all.

Holy moly I didn't know that about P20  I always use Soltan from Boots anyway when I'm going on hols.

OP, how about MACs face primer with SPF? I use it under my makeup - the SPF is 50 so no chance of getting burned.

OMG! I used to used P20 but I was careful i stay under shade cover up with sheer wrap etc cos I just dont want to burn at all! Not worth it.

But i dislike cos find it quite greasy yuk.

Now I used the spray on sunscreen quick dry factor 30 and higher if I can find it.

For a wedding last year in Cpyrus I used Powder Me SPF 30 and i got a tanned version.
    It worked brilliantly.

    Would recommend this.

I also used the pale one for daytime on my face and any exposed skin.
Just dust it on and out the door.

Expensive if you are looking for an all in one body/face SPF
but perfect for face and small areas of skin exposed depending on what you wear like vest and skirt etc.

has anyone looked at the P20 bottle?

It states that it contains UVA and UVB protection.

We will get wrinkles in any event as we age. I use the P20 every day on the face and if sunbathing or abroad all over the body. I NEVER get sunburned when using it.

I can't comment on its protection against skin cancer, but to be honest, I think that it would be very foolish of a manufacturer to claim that their product would guarantee the user would NEVER contract skin cancer.

    About P20,

I used to work in Skincare and we were told that we had to make people aware of P20's 'difference' before they bought it, because it does not have UVA protection.

P20 protects against UVB rays not UVA, the way we were told to explain to customers was UVB for Burning (Redness, Swelling, Irritation) and UVA for Ageing (Wrinkles, Melanoma, Pigmentation Issues). So with P20 you will not get burnt, you won't suffer the immediate consequences of sun exposure but your skin is still susceptible to the full damage of the UVA rays, it does not protect against the rays that cause the serious damage, ie cancer.

We were required to tell people this by Management, and we had to remove P20 off the shelves and could only sell it if the customer asked for it and still wanted it after we had explained.

La Roche Posay and Vichy do fantastic sun protection, SPF 50 or 60, and its designed for the face so it is light and easy to apply make up over it. Go to a Vichy counter in any cosmetics place and tell them what you are looking for and they will help you as best they can. ( I didn't work for Vichy, I just find them to be the best)
