Sky Multiroom, without phone line...

I have searched through many threads regarding sky multiroom and the advise is always both boxes must have phone lines connected at all times.

Looking at getting setup with sky+ in 2 rooms shortly but have no phone lines in either of these rooms and I'm not really prepared to split the existing line twice more and run 2 more lengths of cable just for these boxes .

Now I'm no expert when it comes to sky boxes but i'm fairly certain that there is "technically" no reason for those phone lines to be installed, if they were "really" needed then someone with a single box would also have to have one, and this is not the case. Not having the phone line installed is not going to stop the box working.

And yes I'm aware that people will be shouting that they must be connected so that sky can do a callback whenever they feel like it, but my question to you is.....Has anyone here ever personally been disconnected or had a box stop working because of not having phone line connected?
I'm not looking for "My friends cousin's neighbour's brother had this happen" kinda stories, just wondering if anyone has actually had first hand experience of this, and if so what happened?

I suspect that this is an awful lot of scare mongering from sky, they always have done that, even when I first had sky installed 12+ years ago they said the same thing and yet the phone cable was conencted for install and has been disconnected ever since, no issues

Its not scare monegering sky will simply charge you full price for the second box when the call back does not work.

We have a sky+ box and a 2nd room box as well, need the phone line for the initial set up, we set up the main one first, then then second one. No phone line in either now, both work perfectly.

Sure they will work no problem but has your monthly bill increased? I know of several cases where this has happened.

have two sky boxes, sky insisted i needed phone lines to install the first one and the second multiroom cos if i didn't i would be charged full price or the price of 2 totally seperate boxes or something daft like that. Anyway, 2 years on, both lines unplugged, still being charged what i should be:_full box plus 15 for second box!! No probs

but they definitely would not have installed the multiroom without me letting them run a second cable to phone line but since a unplugged it, as far as I can see, no difference to bill ot service at all !!

Perhaps sky are not as tough on this as they used to be?

We had sky multiroom ( over a year ago) one cable broke (children pulling on it) i didn't notice until my sky bill nearly doubled. Rang them up and they said a box wasn't responding so i got double billed.

I fixed the line and they gave the cash back. they were pretty good about it in fairness - they could have been arses about it like Berlico.

If i had a quid for every time i saw a cust with a cli violation (not havin a phone line connected no callbacks etc) then i would have the price of at least two nights out on the lash, the bill will go way up as it would be the price of two independent boxes

do think tat is a bit of an attack on tony.... i'd retract if i were you.... he doesn't work for sky.... i do... and what he is saying is true...it's a lottery i know of loads of instances where people have been charged.. one guy by over 400 euro before he noticed (triple box) and then there is loads of people who have done it with no consequences.. at the end of the day its up to you...sierra installers or finlays will have to walk away if you don't want the phone lines done because it will come back on them if a check is done and they have done it without the lines...buy phone senders they are the one sure way of avoiding the problem..

Tony, i saw you appear in must of the previous threads that i read about (was expecting a comment from you) and all the time your statements are pretty much what i'd expect to hear from a sky worker (i.e. You must have the phone lines connected yada yada yada)

Early days yet I know but I'm seeing 2:1 saying that disconnecting makes no difference, and I'm certain that many more people out there do not leave the cables connected.

Nobody seems know if/when sky do perform these checks and at what kind of intervals, still finding it hard to believe that they would try to charge extra when there could be some many excuses reasons for the line to be disconnected :P

Well firstly you should re word that as tony came on here to help you and does not work for sky i did work for sky and at least one other poster works for them

You can see 2:1 all you want but i am telling you it is only a matter of time and sky aint stupid you can give an excuse for the line not workin and all is well, try it again and see what happens

Oh and i know exactly the intervals with which the callbacks are made but given your attitude why should i even bother helpin

I had sky+ installed recently and was told I didn't needed a permanent phone connection. The only reason I would have to connect phone line would be to order a film or whatever.

you do need it for mulitroom though. or not as some on here are of the opinion (well that is what is being discussed)

Yeah thats true for only one box (having the phone line connected is also very handy when having problems that an astra scan will fix) this is for multi room (more then one box)

Well I'm sorry if anyone here thinks i was having a go at tony, I have read through maybe a dozen of so threads in relation to sky boxes and phone lines and in each one the most frequent poster was tony and always repeating the same message. It was not meant as an attack, just an observation that his responses seem like something a sky worker in a call center would have been brain washed into saying.... try it out, do a boards search and you'll see what i mean.

Anyway thanks for the reply's so far, as i said i'm sure there are many more out there that will say it works and others saying that it does'nt, just looking to find some factual information from people and not hear say like there is in so many threads on here.

Before making such statements you really should check your facts out. I am not a sky worker, any comments I make are born from experience and what I hear from end users. Not sure exactly what the purpose of your post is but If you did not wish to hear my view you should have said so, I'd quite happily spare you from my opinion.

I've Sky+HD in one room and a standard Sky box in another. Temporary phone lines were available at installation. I've multiroom sub but I now only have a phone line connected to the HD box - I removed the phone line to the standard Sky box shortly after the installer left. No change in billing. And if there was to be I would expect that Sky would notify me before changing the direct debit.

Unfortunately Sky rarely tell you before they take any action.

So have they carte blanch to debit my account as they see fit? Maybe it's in the small print but I'm not aware of it.

That has been the experience of many but another poster also pointed out that they did refund whan the problem was rectified.

Attacking post removed. I'm closing this for now, as it couldn't be kept civil.

Tony posted his experienced opinion, one I'd agree with based on my own experiences.

If you choose not to have lines connected, it's the risk you take. You are breaking the terms of the contract, and Sky reserve the right to charge more if they see fit.

If you get away with no additional charges or warning letters, then I guess you're lucky, as opposed to the norm.

    DD gives Carte Blanche.

You must have both boxes on same line. You can be sued for full value of a second sub otherwise. You agreed a contract.
