Hi, I'm Considering taking film studies in TSM next year. Can anyone offer me ANY information on the course at all?

Am I correct in believing you don't ever get behind a camera and that it's primarily a theory rather than a practical course?

Is it a difficult course? Do people enjoy it?

    Thanks in advance!

I did it a couple of years ago, but only first year. It wasn't difficult and i did enjoy it. Ending up with a 2:1 at the end of first year (though unfortunately failed my other TSM course) without to much stress.

It IS a theory course however. There is no real practical work, though I believe some camera-work and scripting is taught in later years. It does seem to be the course to do these days if you want to be a critic or film historian or what-have-you, but to be honest I think if you actually want to produce films another more practical course would be better, mainly for the fact that it would be more hands-on and arguably more enjoyable. There is also the argument that you can't study film without using a camera of your own and getting at it.

The film lists are good, in the course, and sometimes studying a film can be very enjoyable, but, as you know, sometimes there's films you just don't like, and then it can be a struggle. But then again I never experienced past first year, so its arguable that I'm talking out of my arse, and the people I know who are going into final year now are enjoying it.
