i'm currently in business studies and while i'm trying to keep a positive attitude, I'm pretty sure i wont pass the year. Since it too late for the CAO (as far as i know) is it possible, since i'm already a student in DCU, to transfer into another course. if so can it be any course or one in the same school i.e. since i'm in the business school would i only be able to go into another business course

In theory you can transfer into any course (not School / Faculty dependent) upon the condition that you mean its entry requirements (eg. CAO points, etc.). In practice you must seek approval in advance from both the giving and receiving programme board chairs. However this usually happens in the first few weeks on semester 1. At this stage, they will most likely say to you... sit your exams and see what happens.. then come back and talk to me.
Have a read of the form

Best advice, have an informal chat with the two programme board chairs first

I know of students who have transferred from business to engineering and vice versa, but they had applied to do it earlier in the year. But as far as I am aware a condition of them being allowed to transfer was successful completion of their first year.... Best to go talk to the head of the course you wish to transfer to asap...

Just in case you didn't know, to repeat an entire first year in another course will cost 5,500 euro minimum. I had my course approved and accepted and was then told this :) nice shock!

This is an important point. You only get one chance at "free" fees first year, so a transfer means you have to pay full (EU rate) fees for your 2nd go at 1st year. Happily this reverts to "free" fees for subsequent years

Lets not even bother with the irony of supposedly free fees

    €1,500(Registration) < €5,500(Irish Fees) << €12,000 (International Fees)

So in that respect, yes, they are free.

or you can say out of full time undergrad education for a period of 5 years and then you'll be entitled to full free fees again...
