    My father has for many years asked me about the planes that travel over his house in Raheny.

    I got a pic today and after finding this forum, I told him I'd ask here.

    Basically, what he wants to know is.....

    1) Are they commercial flights or something else that fly over using vapour.
    2) Why do they use this vapour?



    The picture might explain it better. All these flights were going either East to West or West to East, and flying on the same flight path as the planes coming into dublin Airport.

    Appreciate any help.

    1. They are mostly commercial flights and may even a few military flights can also pass over.
    2. That trail is the result of hot exhaust gas hitting extremly cold air. Also some oil added. The GE90's on the B777's will loose 12 pints of engine lubricating oil on a Heathrow New York flight. The Rolls Royce Trent, also on the B777 will loose none.

    I would doubt the oil has any effect on the contrail? Not at that quantity anyway. That's only 6 cans of oil over the whole flight.

    Lol. I dont know the tank capacity of the GE90 (Foggy will probably know). I would say its at least 25 to 30 cans from empty to fill it so using 6 on a flight is not a huge issue. It's enough to be putting in after every flight though. It must be a GE90 thing. As Foggy said it would be more likely that no oil or maybe 1 or 2 cans would be needed after a flight of that length for other engine types.

    I was told that most jet engines can run perfectly well for hours without any engine oil.

    Obviously a different case for piston engine's.

    Obviously a different case for piston engine's.

    They will run with no oil but only once, after that it would be a very expensive shop visit to tear the engine down to replace all the bearings. I would say that the engine may not run for hours without oil as the temperatures involved in the hot section would probably cause the bearings in that area to fail without lubrication.

    Even without ignition, the engines can only windmill for about an hour in a flight before needing bearing replacements.

    On JT9D's anyway.

    No. As you can see my original post is just an innocent question. I didnt know anything about those chemtrails.

    Im not trying to discuss them, just the answer from Davy was interesting and from that video they mentioned Conspiracy theories.

    I have the answer for my father what they are and anything else about chemtrails will NOT be discussed on here by me anyway.

    Nah...... he was thinking along the lines of the Red Arrows :) I did my best to explain about the Airports/destinations in the world.
