Any word on when RTE gonna be free to air. I'm a FTA only person, survive on FTA and rabbits ears (badly as we're in a hollow).

The only hope of seeing RTÉ FTA on Satellite is whenever they get around to launching RTÉ Diaspora (RTÉ International) which will be structured like the old Tara TV but FTA on FREESAT, It will have only Irish programmes and RTÉ produced programming like Fair City etc. This is due to rights issues and the fact RTÉ would have to pay a bigger amount of money for these programmes if they were being broadcast FTA on Satellite and receivable as far away as Cyprus and North Africa.

At the moment when RTÉ buys the rights to something like Desperate Housewives it buys it for Ireland and roughly 6 million people (including NI) wheras for Europe you are looking at 600million people so as you can imagine it is a nonrunner unless you want a TV licence of around a grand a year.

I would not hold my breath for RTÉ International either also due to the depression. The best bet for Digital RTÉ will DTT when it launches sometime this year.

The short answer it that it is unlikely in the Extreme.

The stupid search need more than 3 letter words so it won't find RTE at all. I had to search manually for the threads above. There are more. Right back to 2001 probably!
