Steve Gibson has done a Windows 7 security review on this week's netcast which one can listen to at

You can download the RC version of Windows 7 from

It seems to be stable on most hardware set-ups, and is a lot less dysfunctional than Vista. Or so they say. It runs on lower spec hardware than Vista. The free download works until 2010.06.01. After 2010.03.01 any PC running this code will shut down every two hours! Some fresh meat to play with, perhaps on an old, non system-critical PC in the meantime....!

If you just want to havea look at Windows 7 but don't have a spare box to install it on, you can also use Microsoft Virtual PC.

One can also run other operating systems eg XP (and older software that is not Vista/Windows 7 compatible) in Windows 7 virtual mode.
