I've been working with enough now to start getting an idea of what I'll put into my default start up (I might eve have a few of them).

I'd love to hear about what others are doing.

I have spent so many hours trying to come up with the ultimate template with brilliant screensets .

1 for general arrange, 2 for general mixer, 3 for synths etc., 4 for buses, 5 for megazoomed arrange, etc.One day I even had 22 different screensets.

I've tried all combinations of default templates involving the EXS 24 with my sounds loaded into them and everything.

And after all that, I find it much more enjoyable and surprisingly much better for workflow to start completely blank.

I've seen some producers really get into their 'autoloads' (D ramirez and Funkagenda are two examples that come to mind).

Others like Martin Buttrich are a firm believer in the blank canvas, so whatever works for you, there is a reason there are many different ways to do things in Logic. It caters for a plethora of approaches.

that's become a little famous round Dublin since I gave that sort of lesson to those dj lads a while back.

Basically, I have folders called 'Jeff's alltime totally deadly kicks/hats/whatever' and I've loaded them into the EXS 24 as instruments so that I have like 8 octaves of different hits in each instrument.
Easily called up so it's great for workflow.
Means that if I'm working on a track and I suddenly realise the hat is teh suxor, I can just drag the midi notes to a different key and flick through.

There's a slightly easier way of doing this if you're working with Guru but it's a bit long to get into here.

    Nice!

Any chance of anyone showing high res screen shots of their set ups? I'm stuck working down in a rainy Mayo on my own and some Logic porn would cheer me up :-)

they say necessity is the mother of invention but personally I think laziness is!

whatever gets ya to where ya want to go with the least amount of time and effort is the 'best' way of doing things imo.

Of course that's different for everyone so the 'best' way is entirely subjective.

There is nothing more crap than in the middle of being in a creative flow having to be doing all sorts of tedious crap. So even if you might be able to get a better sound by doing it one way, a lot of the time the twiddlin about will wreck the flow, thus wreckin your vibe, and essentially wreckin your overall output.

Sorry Fro for going a little OT there, but I think when you're trying to figure out default templates you gotta keep these things in mind.

I'm about to get to work on some stuff this evenin so will post screenshots later (and you'll probably be like 'what a messy bastard' but hey once it's not a collaboration you can be completely self indulgent like that.

yeah i do find it a pain having to delete and replace kicks or hats as the song changes so this is something i definitely need to do.just gotta go buy a desk to set my **** up on now

also so some people work better in a structured environment and others thrive on chaos. some people do both just as well depending on the mood (and how Saturn is lining up with Mercury or whatever).

I'm with you all the way. I know all about the differences from several years working on Cubase. I'm just interested in what good ideas I can call my own from other peoples Logic defaults.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 843 ✭✭✭trackmixstudio

My default startup is do nothing.
I then hit File>new and select one of my templates depending on one or two bass drums.
All inputs set to right pres, volumes set, headphone mix sends assigned, podfarm on guide gtr di track, comp and verb on guide vox, click with drumkit for rimshot replacing normal click, click assigned to output 3-4, headphone mix assigned to output 5-6.
Ready to start checking kit straight away.

    Slight thread deviation, sorry Fro.

I see you are using Ultrabeat. I have to say it's the one part of Logic that drives me mad. I can't stand spending all that time building up a drum track.

Back on thread, I don't use presets either but I can see how it would speed things along.

I'm not using templates any more.

I did have one with a silent 808 kick set up for sidechaining but then I adapted it, by adding Groove Templates (for custom quantize).

The actual .lso template must have then got corrupt somehow because the next 2 projects I tried doing with it went absolutely MENTAL.

Now I dont bother at all - Just a blank canvas for me.

It takes 2sec's to set up a sidechain, so you dont really save that much time. Besides, if you are using a different kick to what you normally use, then you will be changing it about a little anyway.

But - What I am doing is..

Saving my own Chanel strip settings.

I have started to organise them by song in different folders.. They appear in the channel options when you click - So if I want to use the Bass Sound from a previous tune, I can. All the EQ / Compression etc.. are saved into the strip.. all I have to do is play what I want.

If I want a "Dance Hat" - then I just bring up a hat or a shaker that I already have. Its in an Ultrabeat & the pattern is already in it. All I have to do is use it or alter / change it if I want a slightly different feel.

I've got a fair few set up now. White noise / Kicks / Snares / Claps / Hats / Bass / Synths - just basics really.

I'm not trying to make the same tune over & over again.. but I did notice that I was looking for similar elements again & again. Rather than the template.. I can get a quick pattern / beat up in minute.. its all pretty much eq'd / compressed etc.. I can then change as I want - if its not what I'm looking for.

The main reason why I wanted to do it was to be able to develop a "Sound".. but without being stuck with the same boring template all the time. Its like your own presets I suppose.

Wow, that sounds like a great idea. I find that sometimes I really like a bass sound from one project/song but am hating the current one. I didn't know there was a way to keep the bass set up for use in other songs.

Any chance you could stick something up that shows how to do this?????

    'save channel strip setting as'

from the dropdown menu at the top of each channel strip in the mixer.

I think its a good idea too - AND I didnt read about it anywhere! LOL :pac:

Its probably out there, but it just came to me one day after my corrupt .lso's.

    Yup - That easy :D

Go into where your name is on the Mac - "Rockshamrovers Computer"

Your Name / Library / Application Support / Logic / Channel Strip Settings / Instrument / (Create your folders in here)

Go into whatever project - Save your settings - Name them - Then go in here & make a new folder with the name of your track (or name it Bass / hats whatever) - Drag & Drop the files into these folders.

Restart Your project & you should be able to get them up.

That simple? I was expecting 2 page 50 step procedure.

Thanks a lot JT. I will give that a go.

i know. so easy it seems like cheating.

best thing is supposing you're working on a track and you go 'love to get that sound i got in that other track blah blah'. you can open up multiple projects simultaneously and just save a channel strip in one and then open it in your current one. genius!

ah on that ultrabeat track im only using a woodblock sample from one of the kits.
all the drums are the audio channels
anyway, yeah saving channel strips is fantastic.:D

I have just 2 different templates for whats happening that day....

Band = 24 Channels of audio and 2 instruments namely Stylus RMX and Atmosphere because they are weapons on a session :) then condense into folders or takes or whatever from there !

    jingle/advert etc.. = 10 instruments and 10 audio
