Selling a UK registration

A friend of mine is going to the UK in July to buy a 1950's car. No problems anticipated with importing it but he was wondering how can he sell the number back to the UK.

The car is costing about €5000 but the number is reliably valued at about £1500-1800. What is the exact process to go through to make sure he can reg the car here but still be able to sell the number later in the UK?

    Thanks in advance.

    1) the car needs to have tax and test on it before the nunber can be transferred at all

    2) the number can be transferred to a retention Certificate.I would do this before the car leaves the uk. the retention cert can then be sold.

    3) Make SURE that it is the oriiginal number, if the number has already been transferred off it, the new number allocated will NOT be transferrable (as a guide if the middle digit is S be very wary as a lot of new age-related numbers are in that series (an old unused allocation from Scotland)

    4) be sceptical of dealers valuations...they wont BUY them from you at that price, they will just advertise and take a commision off whatever they can get for it (if anything).

I;m sure if you looked at www.dvla.gov.uk you'd find more info

Even if it's the original number, it may have been re-issued to the car as non-transferable. Check the documentation to see if this is the case (or contact the DVLA)

make sure the log book isn't filled out by the seller as exported.we had a cort with a plate worth £400 but was invalid as the log book was sent to dvla.
