Mods I hope you don't mind me copying this over to your forum.

    But this thread intrigues me.

I was on duty this morning, and would normally get people ringing up if they witness anything strange like this, but nothing.

So I'm wondering if members of the Coast Guard (are there any here) or members of AGS in the South Dublin bay area have heard anything?.

Here's a photo from the thread..

Sorry to hijack your thread Makikomi, but would you really get calls from the public saying they've seen a rocket, or other weird occurance like that?!

    "Hello, is this the barracks?"

    "Yes"

"Well, are we being invaded by the Russians??"

Certainly a strange one. Is it possibly a firework or flare? If so, why send it up during the day?

Nothing in the news about it.

I don't think flares leave that sort of con-trail, and I doubt anyone would be letting loose a major firework in daylight, which leaves....ummmm...maybe Darth Cowen is fleeing via the escape capsule? Maybe a can of David McWilliams' hair spray was accidentally punctured?

Can see them causing no end of problems for the Coast Guard if they were fired off near the sea.

    Flares.

The old call out system for RNLI and Irish Coast Guard were moroon rockets (red or green) that exploded with a tremendous BANG. They are a disused distress flare that used sound and light so were adopted as a call out system. Two were deployed in sucession once the phone call was received of a marine emergency. Bloody things were great and woke up the whole town when fired!!

Now pagers are in use, although some stations still use them as P/R (let public know they are out on a shout)

Below is a crude example. Proper ones are hand held and louder.

Are the "reporters" in the herald so useless that they have to trawl boards.ie looking for stories?

Anyone else see this ? Live out in the IFSC, and saw it from my balcony this morning at about 7.50am over what appeared to the the direction of Sandymount. Initially thought it was a plane, but was definetly a rocket going up. Wierd

On a website forum, he said: "I thought it was a plane but it was definitely a rocket going up." A video also posted online shows an object above an apparent vapour trail.
