hey gang
hope yer all well
just installed ubuntu
i have been a mac vconvert for two years now, but with the price of teh macs, i began to question spending mac money on a machine that aint much better than a windows, so iv crosssed over to ubuntu and i really really like it

my only problems at the moment are:

1. printing: cant get the page to 'print to fit page' - i have a samsung ml 2010 printer

2. screen resolution: i went into preferences -> screen resolution but the mac screen resolution is 800: 600 and i need 1280 X 1024 for my screen to perform optimally.

any ideas guys, id really appreciate any help on these two points

thanks very much,
Ed

Ok I can see you have a nvidia card. Can you check that the driver for it has been installed?

System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers

Post back and let us know....

Post and run these in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install envyng-core

and then:

sudo envyng -t

Follow the steps and it should sort everything.

The 173 driver is marked as recommended, so activate that one.

So you've tried activating the driver but when you restart, it says it not being used.

Try opening up terminal and:
sudo nvidia-xconfig

and reboot and see if any difference.

Did you try the instructions in my link above, installing the actual offical drivers?

These generally work.

yep maybe later there.

When you say not working, what you mean? - Did the installer run successfully and ask you to write changes to the xorg.conf file during the installation?

Also, you could have conflicts now with drivers, did you try removing all?

cool that would be great

ya i dont think it got as far as writing changes being honest.

as for driver conflict:

the start up tones are working but vlc isnt playing any audio now though

thanks

You may have to chose the audio output device in VLC player to Alsa or whatever you using.

Maybe not Linux, maybe just Ubuntu ;)

Suggest you try something a bit more user friendly like
Mepis or PCLinuxOS or even Mint which is based off Ubuntu. :)

There are lots of options and some suit specific hardware better than others.

Is there any reason you went for 8.10 over 9.04? Try 9.04, should work fine.
