10 Day Marathon Training...

    Hello,
Firstly I started a thread yesterday titled "Cork Marathon Training".
It was locked by mod. However I am not a troll and still would like some advice.
As one of the posters in the thread suggested I ran 3 miles yesterday and 7 today.
Now I don't intend to finish the full race but am aiming for the half way mark at least and i'll see how things go on the day..
Also I understand the risks involved in running a marathon without sufficient training too, IN CASE ANYONE ELSE IS WONDERING...

Anyway, 3 miles yesterday was easy enough (took 28 mins)... The 7 miles today I ran with my dog and it was a little tougher (74 mins), however I could have gone further I feel...

Ciftz suggests a rest day tomorrow, but with so little time to train would I be better off running every day up ontil the race (June 1st)???

    Cheers for any help/advice..

    Tonsoffun..

I'd suggest rest ... if your only planning on running 13 why not run the second half of the marathon, walk the first half and then start to run, the other way round you'll be hitting pain way too early, believe me its no fun getting to half way and been in pain... the second half will feel very long...
maybe also pm the mod to make sure all is ok

I'm with shels4ever - if you're going to walk half the race, it's a far better idea to walk the first half and run from there than the other way around. I've a friend who's done several marathons this way. Others would prefer to alternately run and walk for smaller periods.

Or just aim to walk the whole lot. You'll still finish ahead of people who went running off at the start. Certainly don't start the marathon running though if you've not trained for that kind of distance.

Walk and you will be able to finish, run and you will not.

Whats your motivation for doing this?

I think you could maybe finish it but I dont see what you would get out of it.

I agree that I don't see what a regular here would get out of it, but for the rest of the population getting a great time is no where near the same as just having tried to complete it.

The word "marathon" has some significance to the general population even though people don't always know what it means, as will be proved after that sexist 10k around Dublin with the number of people having claimed to have completetd a marathon the next day at work.

Go head and run it if you want but why bother asking for more advice when the majority of posters on your original log were telling you to forget about it.

One person gave you some ridiculous training tips but he is more interested in seeing what time you can run off virtually no training.

I'm sure if you put your mind to it you will finish but there is nothing training wise IMO you can do now that will help you run the marathon.

I'm wondering the same? Can't see the benefit here. Running marathons hurts, it hurts even the most experienced and fit athletes. If your longest pre-marathon run is *7 miles or so you are not going to do it easily or have fun.

*unless you are superhuman like Ronan Keating who ran no more than 6 miles before his first marathon

No I understand that completely robin, after all not to long ago I was a non-runner attracted by the allure of the marathon.

But I think if you go for it, even if the goal is just to finish (which for me it was) the rewarding part is committing to a well structured plan, putting in the work over a period of months and getting to a decent level of fitness where you can run the race safely and to the best of your ability and just enjoy the day.

Most people off the street could run a marathon right now if you put a gun to their head and told them to run so I dont see the point in risking a serious injury just to travel from two points 26 miles apart.

To me its still a race. I dont really care if somebody runs it in three hours, four hours, five hours or 10 as long as they put the training in and race it to the best of their ability. To me just entering willy nilly disrespects the distance. Just a personal view.

there is a good 10 day training plan on the film 'run fat boy run'.

Have you even registered for the marathon I though they closed on the 12th May?

Yes, I actually registered for both the Belfast and Cork marathons this year.
However since I didn't train, I didn't even attempt the Belfast marathon and went down to Kinsale for the 7's instead...

Feeling like a right lazy bastard as a result, I've decided to at least try the Cork one.

Walking for the first few miles is definitley a good idea..
Doms set in a little this morning but shouldn't stop me doing a little more running this week..

Also I don't mean to belittle the hard work and months of effort put in by all the serious athletes who will be competing. I just wan't to try it for myself regardless of how long it takes me or how far I get...

Whatever happens, I'll be registering for another run this summer which will give me time to train as I need to get back in shape.

For now though, leaving today off as rest day and will run again tomorrow..

Any further suggestions on how far I should run tomorrow???

    Cheers..

TonsOfFun, you are asking for advice with is asking for injury, IMO. You don't appear to settle for anything else. I have already asked you to hold off on this line of questioning by PM until we sort out the results of the muppet check but you started a second thread. Any more, and the ban stick will come out.
