What I'm wondering is where BMW gets all the money from to fund the development of all these pointless models?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭Martron

well its not from joe duffy ha ha ha

People complain a lot about the X6. The X6 isn't ugly. Its just pointless.

    This is pointless and ugly.

It really is terrible, the rims though, i like those.

I hope BMW stumble upon this thread and take a hint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭Martron

the rims are class. there are features that could work. but i dont like the route thet are takin with the 5 series

How is a hatchback 5 series pointless?

Seems like a practical family car to me.

that is what the 1 series is for. i thing they really are ruining the 5 series

BMW are not a brand for niche solutions. There are other brands for that and BMW should just stick at what they're good at, innovation is not their thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭JHMEG

    Nay
I don't see how the 5-series could be ruined if this is being offered aswell.

I'd also beg to differ on innovation - BMW have a string of firsts to their name.

I think maidhc is right: BMW is becoming more mainstream every day, so it they should broaden their range to suit what people want. Hatchbacks are especially popular in the UK.

Not in cars the size of a 5 series.

Not in cars the size of a 5 series.

Yep, and executive hatches have been done before and all failed miserably, i.e, the Renault Vel Satis and the Opel/Vauxhall Signum. Both these cars offered interior space comparable to cars in the 5 series segment. They both flopped horribly. These were both bad brands for executives, though. Thats not to say that the 5 series GT will flop. I think it will BTW. I just feel most people would fear in terms of resale value and stuff to just go for a saloon or estate

And as for hatchbacks being popular in the Uk because of versatility or whatever, people who want versatility in an exec/mini exec, go for an estate. Estate versions of stuff like the 5(Or 3 for that matter) series is a lot more popular in the UK than here. I'm really struggling here to see where the market is for this yoke.

As well theyve copied Skoda with the twin opening boot thing

I'm not sure myself, i think the horrible colour of this particular one isn't doin it any favours.

The main reason hatchbacks are more popular in the UK, 4 million people in Ireland and 64 million people in the UK. There's bound to be more of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,722 ✭✭✭maidhc

Not in cars the size of a 5 series.

The Mondeo MkIV is more or less the same size as a 5 series, and a 520d isn't much more expensive than a high spec Ford.

BMW are after getting very astute at selling volume cars while maintaining the aura of exclusivity. People will still claim Passats/Mondeos/Vectras are "everywhere", while looking enviously a 520d!

I have no doubt the 5 series is a fine car, but a limo or exclusive car it aint. Why wouldn't people want a hatch?

oh yeah, right, lets look at those, shall we ?

    X6
    1 series
    Ti Compact
    'Flame Surfacing'
    This 5 GT thingy...

The only 5GT worth a damn is HERE

In fact, the makers of THAT one should sue BeeEmm for defamation ! :p:p

And as for those wheels ? Halfords would be proud.

    Look at mondeos on Autotrader:
    4477 H/B
    329 Saloon
    1094 Estates

Not saying a Mondeo is exactly comparable to a 5 Series, but in England it's saloons that are the niche car.

Not that it matters since this car is so ****off ugly.

    Nicer in blue

but what isn't nicer in blue eh?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭JHMEG

    Nay
The figures shown by Tragedy, above, show that in the UK where there is a hatchback available it vastly outsells saloons and estates.

BMW is probably on to (another) winner.

    Ford Focus on carzone:
    Saloon(872)
    Hatchback(1450)
    Estate(150)

    On Autotrader:
    Saloon 439
    H/B 10136
    Estate 1838

Mazda 6(mazda 3 is about the same):
    738 H/B
    119 Saloons
    147 Estates

    Opel Vectra:
    4483 H/B
    168 Saloons
    541 Estates

Is it settled that the UK has a penchant for Hatchbacks over saloons yet?

And the 5 GT is actually based on the 7-series platform, so it should be a hugely practical and spacious hatchback.

That said, it looks feminine. BMWs are supposed to look aggressive and masculine. So that's a nay from me.

i have had 8 bmws in the past number of years and i currently drive a 5 series so i can say i like the brand :D but there aint no f**kin way id buy one of thes they are horrible

Giant hatchbacks are the answer for people afraid to buy Tourings (Estates). They may have a bad image in parochial Ireland, but IMO most would agree a 5 Series Touring is a nicer looking vehicle than the just been-rear-ended looking GT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I don't think you can call a car with only 2 rear seats as that practical.

If this car is a success it will prove how powerful the BMW brand is. It will also prove that the BMW brand is even more powerful than that of Mercedes, since niche cars like their R-Class absolutely flopped.

The 2 rear seat configuration is optional. 3 seats are standard:

    This.

    AND
What really worries me is the tought of an M5 GT.

I'd love an estate, I'd probably get one of the saloon.

    Nay
I must admit it is growing on me... Whether or not I would buy one though is another question!
