To all Leinster fans and in the witness of all the users of the rugby forum on Boards.ie:

Without a doubt, Leinster are the greatest side in Europe and after years of pain and anguish, have finally reached the cusp of greatness.

Even as a proud Munster man for as long as I live, it gave me no greater pleasure to see Irish legends like Mal O' Kelly and the reborn Brian O' Driscoll recieve a Heineken Cup winners medal. It is a true testament to their unfettering loyalty to the Leinster Rugby Crusade over the last 10 years.

To see Johnny Sexton put in a performance of pure class and composure was a joy to behold. It will keep me soundly asleep at night in the knowledge that we have a faultless player to replace Ronan O'Gara for Ireland.

I also congraulate Cian Healy. He outshone his opposite number Castrogiovanni and was a workhorse in the loose. He is a wonderful talent who plays with such panache and confidence.

What more can you say about Brian O' Driscoll. While we see overhyped pretty boys like Henson doing ballet on the pitch, this man epitomises strength, courage and commitment. There was no way he was going to leave the pitch after his injury. The Lions didn't even enter his head. His only focus was victory and glory for his province.

Anyway, what a day. I implore all of you who hold Irish rugby dear to celebrate today, the day when Leinster added their name to Heineken Cup history.

    WELL DONE LEINSTER!!!

You only got to read the whos who of ERC rugby that we beat on the way here and especialy some of those tight away games and in particular that not exactly home game to Munster !

BOD and a few Leinster boys have at least done 1 thing no other Irish teams has done and that is win the REAL double GS and H Cup.

This will be a long time if ever repeated !

That is history in itself, well done boys, I salute you at 5am, in my jocks and Leinster shirt, from way to far away from where my heart is ! :)

Hold your horces. Leinster are a top team, but they are not "without doubt the best side in Europe" as you put it.

Erm, we just won the Heineken Cup having beaten 3 past winners along the way. 2 of which are still at the top of their game. I think it's fair to say that Leinster are the best side in Europe

    12/4/09 15:30 QF Harlequins 5 - 6 Leinster The Twickenham Stoop 12,638
    2/5/09 17:30 SF Munster 6 - 25 Leinster Croke Park 82,208
    23/5/09 17:00 F Leicester Tigers 16 - 19 Leinster Murrayfield

Now hang on there, note the away games and as I stated earlier, the lack of a clear home adavantage in beating Munster.

Now note, that on the way to this victory, we beat the GP champs, the ML champs, current holders and 2 of the most succesful HCup teams ever.

If that dont make us the best team in Europe right here and right now, I dont know what the hell does.

Not to mention a GS for some of the boys too ! No other group of Irish players ever, has won a GS and H Cup in one year - I think that also gets a special mention  Throw in few Lions caps for a Fairy tale season .........................

Leinster have indeed just won HEC and for that honour they are the best in Europe!!

I agree with Kev, I dont think the winners of a cup competition can be classed as the best. I never felt Munster were the best in the europe just because they won the HEC and I certainly didnt think Liverpool in 2005. I also dont think any team can actually be called the best team at any one time because there's so little in it.

Officially According to Official IRB endorsed ERC rankings munster are still the best side in Europe http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/121_9900.php so in essence this thread is wrong

Leinster and munster are the top two clubs in europe and to be fair no one even comes close... french club rugby is a joke as is welsh club rugy and scottish and even english...

Man, I'd say if the French clubs got to rest as much as the Magners teams, Stade, Clermont and Toulouse would spank most teams any day, and would probably out-muscle Leinster or Munster.

Clermont in particular almost beat Munster when down to 14! We tend to mock the French, but the reason they do so poorly in Europe compared to France is twofold: they've such a long season that they're the tiredest of all, and their home league matters more.

Case in point - Cardiff Blues - the reverse French team, great in Europe, great in the 'A' team tournament that is the Anglo-Welsh and shíte in the Magners League. Embarrassingly bad in the Magners.

    You're right.

I really, really hate to see this sour grapes for a Munster fan. :(:(

nice of em to mind the cup for us…no matter what munster say complacency’s cost us another title…double next year…oh yes i think so!
Welcome to the league table of champions Leinster. Below is the roll of honour of European Cup winners, a trophy which is sponsored by a product which is incompatible with the pursuit of sporting excellence.

I’ve included a totally objective appraisal of each team in brackets after each win.

    European Cup winners
    1995/96: Toulouse (French bastards)
1996/97: Brive (French bastards with different accents)
    1997/98: Bath (English bastards)
    1998/99: Ulster (Northern bastards)
1999/2000: Northampton (Total bastards - they beat us)
    2000/01: Leicester (Saxon bastards)
2001/02: Leicester (Unmitigated bastards - they beat us)
    2002/03: Toulouse (Cheese eating bastards)
    2003/04: Wasps (bbbbbbbb….astards)
2004/05: Toulouse (Still eating cheese, still bastards)
    2005/06: Munster (Glorious champions)
    2006/07: Wasps (Still bastards)
2007/08: Munster (Glorious champions - again)
    2008/09: Leinster (Dublin bastards).

As a Leinster fan I find that quite funny and not offensive, I would work from the point of view that it was intended as a joke and maybe people shouldn't take sport that seriously if they want to get offended by it!
