Are you just going to Ireland? 99% of car insurance policies in Ireland cover travel to the UK as is and I would suspect that UK policies are the same. You don't need to arrange anything and you definitely don't need a green card in Ireland - this is basically a standardised insurance certificate but its a thing of the past at this stage. You never need one in an EU country. Just check your insurance policy booklet and cause you're gonna have a UK vehicle with no insurance disc on the window, take the insurance cert with you.

Prices vary wildly - depending on what time of day or what day of the week. You can go through the booking process but click away before the payment stage on irishferries.com or stenaline.co.uk and find out.

check your insurance as it may only allow 30 days / 3 months abroad

if cost is the biggie then look at Dublin Liverpool too

stupid question but since you are asking about a green card ...
do you have an EU passport ?

If not you might need a visa for Ireland as common travel are only applies to UK/ROI citizens.

There is no formal agreement between Ireland and UK regarding the common travel area and it is not provided for in legislation.
    ...
(On arriving in Ireland you may sometimes be asked for valid official photo-identification such as a passport or driving licence which shows your nationality. This is to prove you are an Irish or UK citizen who is entitled to avail of the Common Travel Area arrangements.)
    ...
Irish immigration officers have the power to carry out checks on people arriving in the State from the UK and to refuse them entry to the State on the same grounds as apply to people arriving from outside the Common Travel Area. These checks are carried out selectively.

"green card" = International Motor Insurance Card System, nothing to do with immigration when used in an insurance context.

So what do u guys suggest early booking worth it or is it the same at last min

Early as possible, prices go up as the ferry fills up and unlike airlines, they don't go down for last minute.
