Why is one computer's connection poor and not the other?

    Last week, I bought a brand new Toshiba laptop. It was fairly expensive with a dual processor, 4096MB RAM and 300GB hardrive.

    However, the internet connection keeps breaking. I tried to stream the rugby there and it keeps stopping.

    My old laptop (running off the same signal) is completely fine and much faster (with less memory and power).

    It's extremely annoying and disappointing as I thought the extra memory etc would mean I'd have a pretty good machine.

    It's useless for trading on the betting exchanges (which is what I bought it for) as I cant risk the connection going down (possibly leaving me with large liabilities). It's a bit better when I plug the cable directly in but not much and that's not ideal.

    Whats the difference between the two? What OS? Are they both on wireless? are they both busy at the same time? And have you checked that your Router is Secured?

    The new one is Vista and the old one XP.

    They are both wireless but I've tried plugging them in directly but the problem persists on the new computer. It's doesn't matter if the old computer is on or not, it still happens.

    try updating the drivers for your network card in the laptop.Although it is a new one the drivers could still be out of date.

    the fact that the connection doesnt improve when you plug it into the router would make me look at the network settings and/or the network card in the laptop.

    Just compare the xp network settings with the one's you have on the laptop

    go to the toshiba website, look for the Support/Drivers pages, look for your laptop and run down the list of drivers. Go ahead and download any relating to networking or wireless.

    The reason I asked if it was vista is because Vista has this terrible knack: it searches for the optimum wireless connection every 60 seconds or so. It wouldnt normally be faulted for a connection drop though. The only time I ever worried about it was from little skips or jumps while playing games online - the connection never dropped outright. And you say its the same on cable. So im inclined to think its either the network driver you have installed.

    I've tried something and so far, it seems to work so fingers crossed.

    I got the advice on the eircom page:

    Basically, you change the wireless channel.

    It seems much faster but I'll see how it performs over the next few days.

    Toshiba usually use Intel Wireless Cards (like Dell) with custom drivers. Try upgrading to the Intel Drivers themselves. I did this for my friends Dell XPS not too long ago (also with Vista) and it make a huge improvement.

    Also, I suggest you use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

    OK the above hasn't continued to work and I'm thinking it's the router.

    Was thinking of trying a new router but are they all the same?

    Is there much work involved in changing a router or are they just 'plug and play' so to speak?

    Finally, any place I should/shouldn't buy from?
