    Thanks for the help!

Well, he's right. All my favourite authors seemed to get their break publishing stories in magazines like "Amazing Tales" in the '70s, but those magazines are almost extinct these days so you would be lucky to find one. The short story is a dying art-form in general, and sci-fi stories are a subgenre within that so its even harder to get them published.

The Stinging Fly accepts general short stories. I don't know if they take genre stuff but you might give it a try. If you find somewhere that takes sci-fi/fantasy as a speciality, post a link here because I haven't found any in years of searching.

What about Interzone http://ttapress.com/interzone/ (UK) or Weird Tales http://www.weirdtales.net/
    (US)

Just search for Sci-fi mags, there are two or three around, but it is very competitive and hard to break through.

http://www.ralan.com/ has most markets for SF on it, sorted into paying, non paying, pro rates etc. Also tells you whether they accept online submissions and so on.

I can't offer you practical help foe making sure you get published, waht I can do is help you write. I have creative dreams too, but perfectionism and anxiety of trying to hard is a hinderance. You need calm, detachment, and focus, to be inspired.

I recommend Taoism, maybe Buddhism, they don't have strict or contrived codes you have to follow. just check em out, because they are helping me attain calm and focus right now. As is Epicuriansim. They are helping the words come and say what will be will be this is the best I'm going to produce and it'c more meaningful. Mindset is a key.
