New Honda Civic 1.8

Any opinions on the new Civic?...
Had my heart set on a Toyota celica but since Toyota ceased production of the celica in 2006 it`s put me off a bit, so the next choice for me now is the civic.
Any experience good or bad would be appreciated especially opinions on opting for a manual or an automatic.

You could buy a 2006 Celica?

I don't understand OP how the Civic could be then next choice for you after a Celica. One is a sports coupe while the other is a medium size family saloon/hatchback, tow very different cars.

Yep..the only drawback would be the fact that it`s now a car which is no longer in production so maybe hard to get bits and pieces in years to come and probably would not be too desireable if I had to sell it on in a couple of years?

Agreed, but the civic is as fast..if not a tad faster and there is really not a great choice around at the moment with regards looks (Hyundai coupe looks the part but thats all it has to offer)..btw I was thinking of the hatchback S version.

Good looking car with decent performance.....lets face it most cars like the BMW 3 series etc has a bonnet, cabin then boot and each one looks similar the next ( I`m turnin into me dad now)..i.e. the Bmw looks like a new type corolla if you know what I mean whereas the celica looks like a `different` car and the new civic hatchback you must admit does stand out from the rest.

So now I am stuck back to where I was six months ago or thereabouts when I first contemplated changing my car ( I had a bereavement in my family and all was put on hold), I think I probably will end up going over to the UK and bagging me a 2006 celica Gt and be done with it .
    Thanks for the replies guys.

You're talking about a 3 year old car. It will cost you less than half what it cost new. When it comes to selling you'll not loose as much as you would on a newer car.

Parts will be available for another 20 years at least.

while all that may be true, now i say may be true, but your not gona get the decent performance from the 1.8 civic imo

the celica is ok, but its not a performance car unless you get the T-Sport 190bhp version.

i would look at a skoda octavia VRs or Golf GTi maybe or a newer civic Type R if you can stretch to that?

although the celica GT is good, it has good handling, 189bhp and 133Ft/Ibs Torque and does look ok, not my cuppa tea but thats irrelevent.

you could buy a 320d with 190bhp and 272 Ft/Ibs of torques like mine :p which is NO corolla i might add :D

You mean a remapped 320d? He'd be better off buying a standard one and remapping it then. Celica is more fun to drive anyway.
OP, Civic is a decent car, but if you want a Celica buy a Celica.

The 1.8 Civic has 140bhp, same as the low-end 1.8 Celica. I've never driven a Celica but I'd imagine its similar to the Civic - low torque unless you keep the revs high. I'd imagine a 190bhp Celica is even more rev happy.

New Civic Type-R, now that's what I'd like - if only the mere mention of "Type-R" didn't make insurance companies sh1t their pants and treat you like a rapist.

Speaking of 320D's, the 2.2 diesel Civic can apparently be remapped to 180-190bhp :pac:

The more I read about and think about the Mazda 6 MPS the more I wish I didnt have to hold onto my car until this time next year. I think they are unreal value. 266bhp, AWD, 380nm of torque and they look ok too. I dont think there is better value out there especially as a car has to be RWD or 4WD for me to buy it. I would imagine its quite easy to get more power out of them also.

I agree 100%. I just wish I wasn't too poor to afford one. I'm hoping that they'll escape the Irish buying public so that I can find a cheap unabused one in 3 years for 10k... muha-ha-haaaaa.... :D

Edit - just looked at that link you posted. That's a scam. They didn't come out till 2006, and that's about 7,000 too cheap.

Maybe its too cheap but the car does exist according to cartell.

There is a newer one on carzone for around 20k also so I think maybe in a private sale in the current climate the price of the one I linked to is not far off.

You have the same plan as me also, I couldnt afford one now either even if I could sell my car, until they get cheaper and I get more money it will wait near the top of my next car list!!

Ah, early UK import so. They were released in September 05 over there, but really only started to appear in 2006.

The missus drives a Type S Civic. She's had no problems so far. It's nippy enough for it's size and I often take it for a spin ahead of my own boring saloon. The Type S is a lot sportier looking and it has some minor handling differences as far as I know.....

Would I buy one for myself as a bloke?.....Well, quite honestly, NO. While it does have a good engine and some nice handling, it's still a bit of a 'birds car' imho.....oh yeah, and there's also the issue with the back window.....jesus, it is a job and a half trying to see out

I've only briefly driven a new Civic but one issue that all the road testers complain about is the ride quality - supposed to be rock hard. It's not that I'm overly concerned with comfort but that type of deficency is a big drawback on country roads and a car that absorbs bumps handles better and safer - it isn't thrown about the place.

+3 on Mazda 6 MPS. AWD, big power, nice looks. Car fans should be queuing round the block. I guess the plasticy interior puts them off:rolleyes:

    Mrs Bee,

She got a new saloon Civic 1.8 a few months ago, excellent performance.
Don't buy the vin ordinaire, with so so build quality of the UK manufactured hatchback, go for the saloon, apart from it being built in Asia it handles much much better

And if you think Mrs Bee is a typical wimmin driver, she did rather well some time ago rallying in the UK.

the saloon is a heck of a lot more conservative than the hatchback, I think the Civic was in the running based on looks.

saloon looks like ...as I said in my post...your average bmw 3 series or toyota corolla etc..I know they are a good car tho.

Thanks for that opinion..what I was looking for, looks like it`s definitely a 2006 celica now!! :o

Drive the Celica before you get too excited :)

I'd have a TT Quattro over a Celica every time. I know the Toyota is well built etc, but definitely drive the 2 cars before you buy.

The 190 is quite swift, but also (I thought) quite soft. Actually quite comfortable, if that's what you're after.

Thanks for all the replies guys...
I drove a couple of celicas and wasn`t overly impressed with them plus the fact that I would have to go over to Britain to get a decent spec one and as I said they are now discontinued from production.
I drove a couple of civics and fell in love with them...especially all the computer gizmos and displays and excellent performance to boot..anyhoooo,
I bit the bullet yesterday and bought a 2008 civic type s.
